If there is ever a time the troops could use our support, both physically and mentally, now is it. Connor Middle School sixth grade students Heather Goris and Rachel Rogers, recognizing the need for support, have spearheaded an effort to collect donations for the troops. Soon after coming up with the idea, the duo searched for a locationlocation to hold the donation drive. It did not take long for Kevin Lipp, owner of Adrian's Custard and Beef, 2335 Grand Island Blvd., to volunteer the site of his business as their official collection point. This Saturday, April 5, from noon to 5 p.m., Goris, Rogers and other volunteers will sit outside and brave what could be unseasonably cold temperatures to collect donations. With the date and destination set, the next and current task for Goris and Rogers is to spread the word throughout the community. That has been and currently is being done through posters, news releases, word of mouth, and help from family members. Speaking of help, you are probably wondering what you can do or donate to make this a success. Currently, travel-size items and phone cards are in demand. Here is a closer look at what is actually needed by our troops: Batteries (AA, D cell), tapes/CDs, videos, travel games such as chess arid checkers, model cars and planes, crossword puzzles, books, magazines, local newspapers, playing cards, paper envelopes, stamps, pens, disposable cameras, wash rags, shoe Area residents rally to support U.S. troops Over 1,500 people from Erie and Niagara County showed their colors to honor local military, currently fighting in the Middle East, during a candlelight vigil held last Monday at the Summit Park Mall. The vigil featured performances of patriotic songs, videos of military planes patrolling the American homeland and speeches by the commanders of the 107 th Air Refueling Wing and the 914ih Airlift Wing. The first number was performed by a group of 12 girls singing in teased and messy "orphan clothing," complete with striped socks arid black shoes. The second musical selection, "Easy Street," was performed by Miss Hannigan and her ruthless sidekicks (also in full costume). Following their performance, the board moved to various meeting items, which included middle school student Scott Quider being presented a Certificate of Excellence from the 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community awards program.. Quider was recognized for collecting pop cans and using the money he collected to purchase 3,000 pounds of potatoes, which he donated to the "Friends of the Night" foundation, whose main goal is to help the homeless. Quider said "he got joy out of helping others and making a difference in his community," as well as encouraging other youth to help the needy. He was commended for his excellent demonstration of community service. Science Olympiad Team Next up, the Science Olympiad team from the middle school was introduced by their coaches, Mrs. Sally Zelasko, Mrs. Sue Boyer and Ms. Camille Dalla Torre. The team recently participated in the "Science Olympiad Competition," held at McKinley High School in Buffalo. The event featured 16 teams from area schools including Grand Island. Prior to the competition, the team was informed of the events and was challenged to create a device that would perform a task. These tasks ranged from rising a helium balloon to. making a sequence of events occur through a series of simple machines. Team members Joe Aladeen and Anthony Poupalos demonstrated their invention they used to participate in the "Robot/Billiards Event." The goal was to pick up billiard balls with their home-made robot. Their invention earned them sec-. ond place as well as a silver medal. continued on page 20 BS" continued on page 20 US' ["""At a Glance I Martin's Fantasy Island : I Annual Job Fair 1 2400 Grand Island Blvd. 1 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. j 1 For more information I ' call 773-7591 1 Lenten Fish Fry | St. Stephen School Cafeteria, j 2080 Baseline Rd., 4to 7 p.m. I .
