In fact, those who want to make the dream of business ownership a reality often face many challenges before they open their doors to the public. Commonly, the prospective entrepreneur must develop a business plan in which they identify their market and form their business goals. They must find a location suitable for their needs, acquire financing or make a substantial monetary investment which might typically be one's life savings, and then be prepared to devote long hours of hard work often for little or no pay. Challenges Perhaps one of the greatest challenges to face the owner of a new business is that of making the public aware of the new choice they now have. Successful Grand Island business owners have known for years that they have a very effective tool at ; their disposal - the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce Telephone Directory, the official directory of Grand Island. At just over 200 pages, the success of this directory over the years has often been attributed to the fact that what it was designed to do what it does very well; to be a complete reference guide for Grand Island residents. As one would expect, the directory offers a white-pages section of phone numbers and addresses of residents and businesses on Grand Island. What is a pleasant surprise is the oversize print that was used to make the listings more easily read. Community Guide A complete community guide provides listings for area schools, churches, and government offices. The directory also features highlights, accomplishments and fun facts of area people, clubs, organizations, and events. And if you are trying to find an area business the directory offers a detailed yellow-pages section. Once you have found the business your looking for, check the coupon ; section for valuable offers from some of Grand Island best businesses. If you are a business that wants i to be seen, advertising in the j Yellow Pages has proven an effective means. Competitively priced, placement in the Yellow Pages provides the entire community with the year-round ability to quickly find important details of your business. If you would like to benefit from inclusion in the official directory, contact Ed McCaffery at 773-3651. the deadline for the 2004 edition of the directory is Oct. 15. Grand Island business spotlight-Hizair Hair Salon--"Mr. McCaffery had to twist my arm to get me to place my first coupon in the directory," said Susan Matlock, owner of Hizair. The coupons were such a success I couldn't wait for this year's book to come out. I put in twice as many coupons as last year." Garman Many close races in last Tuesday's primary elections have resulted in numerous re-counts throughout not only Grand Island, but also in Western New York. At the forefront is the less than 60 vote-spread which separates the race for the Erie County Legislature, District 10, between incumbent and Legislative Chair Charles Swanick, and Kevin Hardwick, both Republicans. On the Island, residents and candidates alike are also anxiously awaiting the results in the races for the Grand Island Town Board, as well as the Grand Island Town Clerk's office. As of yesterday afternoon, unofficial results from the Erie County Board of Elections showed on the Independent line, candidates Richard W. Crawford Jr. with 44 votes or 48 percent, and Michael E. Heftka with 48 votes, or 52 percent of the count. One absentee vote was cast on the Independent line. On the Conservative line, Craw- ford recorded 41 votes or 53 percent of the count, while Gary Roesch had 36 votes or 47 percent. In the race for Grand Island Town Clerk, on the Independent line, Patricia A. Frentzel had 55 votes, and on the Conservative line, she recorded 36 votes, with 100 percent of the districts reporting on Grand Island Town Clerk, Nancy Samrany, is seen emerging from a voting booth, located at Town Hall, this past Tuesday. Samrany decided not to seek re-election this year after many years of service to Grand Island. Vying for the position are candidates Patricia Frentzel and Robin Swedish. continued on page 2 m" ClMMifmi Ai§ Cat ilMmlm oi*r Classified §e%imm $BS°° & under ads mEE 3»gSfi&H Tuesday I Grand Island Alumni Association j General Meeting Sidway School Meeting Room, 2451 Baseline Rd., 6:15 p.m. Everyone welcome River Lea Quilter's Guild Fall Meeting High School Cafeteria, 1100 Ransom Rd, 7 p.m. For more information call 773-2643 Wednesday j Knights of Columbus Chicken and Biscuit Dinner for SABAH 1841 Whitehaven Rd., 4:30 to 7 p.m. Take-out orders available For a complete listing of area events, visit NFP's Web site at I www.wnypapers.com 1 .
