ISLAND DISPATCH With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY • 773-7676 VOL. 47 NO. 8 • May 4, 1990 28 PAGES 35« Huth Rd. Students Lead Recycling Effort Councilman Marion Fabiano was responsible for bringing Modern Disposal's new truck, capable of sorting for recycling, to Huth Road School. Nearly all of the 500 students and most of the faculty contributed their recycling materials to the experiment and attempted to fill the huge truck. The goal was nearly met with a tremendous amount of paper, glass, plastic and metal dumped into the sorting bins at the side of the truck. Some 3200 lbs. were collected. Photo by Barbi Larr Proposed Law Limits Dock Space BOATHOUSES and dock ing facilities in residential areas would be limited to accommodating a maximum of three boats if a proposed law, to be aired at Monday's public hearing, is approved by the town board. The final draft of the mandate to be discussed also notes the limit applies to poweroperated boats and nonpower crafts such as rowboats, sailboats and canoes. It also states such facilities would be limited to 15 feet or one story in height from water level, and are not to be used for commercial or income purposes and that living in boats or facilities is prohibited. A legal notice of the hearing in an earlier edition of the Island Dispatch failed to include the above explanation, and may have led interested Islanders to assume it had been omitted from the law as it was first proposed in May 1989. Reference to limiting of boats allowed to be docked in front of a residence and prohibiting them to be used for living quarters brought strong opposition at lasts year's public hearing. The final draft of the proposed ordinance also identifies boathouses as any structure used for the storage of vessels and docks or a wharf or portion of a wharf extending along the shoreline and generally connected with the uplands throughout its length. It also notes that violators of any of the provisions of the proposal could be subject to a fine of not more than $250 or imprisonment of not more than 15 days. MEK Buckhorn Fire Destroys Wildlife FIRE THAT raged for hours in Buckhorn State Park Wednesday destroyed about 70 acres of marshland containing much wildlife nesting there. Grand Island Fire Company was aided by mainland units in quelling the blaze. Two volunteers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The fire was apparently caused by a spark from welding torches used on Thruway repairs underway between the bridges, firemen reported. Island firefighters used the Company's water rescue boat to reach some parts of the blaze. They were assisted by Sheridan Park and Kenmore Fire Companies. Visible for miles, the fire resulted in a traffic jam on the northbound Thruway which is often congested because of road shoulder construction between the spans.
