Photo by Mary Slrwart Town May Delay Subdivision Planning THE TOWN board Monday will meet in special session to discuss the possibility of placing a six month delay on further subdivision plans and requests for rezoning. Councilman James R. Sharpe. in a communication to the board, recommended the town take inventory of its infrastructure, set a plan for Grand Island and "not only look at the financial impact of new development but at the cost of maintaining our current neighborhoods." Sharpe requested the six month "delay and review" on subdivisions, site plan approvalapproval and "any request for rezoning." The moratorium would be for a period of six months, from May 7 to October 15 during which time, he estimated the master plan update committee would complete its findings. Sharpe also recommended a professional community planning group be employed "to make recommendations regarding the (master) plan and the writing of zoning codes to enforce it." The town board, on May 21, will decide whether to pursue the course of action Sharpe suggests. MEK Town Petitions For Clean Water THE TOWN board, in a resolution presented by Councilman James Pax, has requested that both the United States and Canada take immediate steps to end discharges of persistent toxic substances and chemicals, implement cleanup plans and timetables to live up to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1972. The resolution, in part, also states, "The International Joint Commission recently named "42" toxic hot spots in the Great Lakes Region, including the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers. "Poisons and chemicals abide in the waters that flow through the Niagara Frontier, posing a threat to human health. "Grand Island has the Niagara River completely surrounding the Town and its residents depend on the Niagara River for their drinking water as do twenty-five million other Great Lakes residents." MEK Two Die In North Bridge Crash AN ELDERLY Niagara Falls couple were killed in a head-on crash about 5:15 P.M. Monday at the North Grand Island Bridge. Pronounced dead on arrival at hospitals were Alexander Dunlop, 81, and his wife, Jane, 78. According to investigators' reports, a car driven by Dunlop, crossed into the southbound lane of the bridge and collided with a tractor trailer.
