New Year's Day, Maria Denise Bobak made history at Buffalo General Hospital. She was Erie County's first born of 1989 arriving some 12 days ahead of schedule to proud parents Denis* and Jerome Bobak of Orchard Road. A healthy 8 pounds, 1 1/4 ounces, Maria Denise made her parents leave a New Year's Eve party early, stranding two year old brother Stephen at the home of his grandmother, Mary Kay Zaccarella. Isle residents for three years, Jerome also is employed on the Island as a draftsman with Cannon Design. Photo by Barbi I.arf Marina Gets Green Light GRAND ISLAND by June 1 st will be able to lure boaters v/ith a 306 slip marina on East River Road adjacent to Holiday Inn and the River Oaks Golf Course. The Grand Island Town Board Monday approved the final site plan and exception to subdivision regulations for River Oaks Marine, Inc., developers of what has been hailed as "a new concept in marine design." Marina President Timothy J. House said boaters at River Oaks will be the "ultimate winners." By purchasing shares in the Cooperative Corporation, a boater puts a cap on rising slip costs while always having the option to recapture his or her investment. House explained that boaters will be able to buy stock in the River Oaks Marine Association in the form of a 99 year lease which will provide the use of a slip and other amenities available on the 16.9 acre site. The Island stands to collect $50,000 for recreational purposes in lieu of park land or open space, town officials were assured. Payment will be made on or about June 1, 1989 out of proceeds from the sale of shares in the cooperative corporation.The multi million dollar marina will be what is popularly known as a dockominium plan, operating much like condominium projects, House said. Transcript	Letters Thanks for the generosity and support To the Grand Island community: This past Sunday, a fund-raiser was held at the Grand Island Rod and Gun Club for our daughter, Meaghan Grotz, wtio is awaiting a double lung transplant as a result of her long fight against cystic fibrosis, which is slowly destroying her lungs. We were overwhelmed and humbled by the number of people who attended this event and lent their support to help Meaghan offset her medical costs associated with a double lung transplant. We wish to thank everyone in our community who lent their support and generosity to help this event be such a huge success. As lifelong Island residents, we have witnessed throughout the years what a special community we live in. We have been so touched by the response we have felt from this Island. It seems everyone has come together, be it strangers, friends or family, to help lend their support to Meaghan. It is truly inspiring to witness the generosity and offers of help from this community. We want to thank the Rod and Gun Club for allowing us to hold the event at their club. We wish to thank each and every member for ail your support, kind words, help in setting up and cleaning up after the event.. We wish to thank the town for lending the police presence to help in the crowd control. We would like to recognize and thank the administration, faculty, staff and students of all the Grand Island schools for your tremendous fund-raising efforts in Meaghan's behalf. All your letters and cards with words of encouragement and donations have truly inspired us. We would also like to express our thanks and gratitude to everyone who volunteered to work Meaghan's benefit and contributed to its huge success. We wish to thank the community for the amazing baskets that were donated to the benefit. We had well over 250 donations for the raffle., To Meaghan's friends, their parents, brothers and sisters, a heartfelt "thank you" for always offering your help and support, whether it be volunteering your time, your words of encouragement or just a hug. And last but not least, to our families and especially to my brother Dan Drexelius "Double D" for your tremendous effort and hard work to organize and execute such a successful event. Thank you and we love you all. Meaghan has overcome and will continue to battle, major obstacles. We have hope that Meaghan will get her second chance, and once again, breathe on her own with her new set of lungs. It is so rewarding to know we ; live in such a supportive, caring and generous community. Thank you again for your donations and support and for making "Meaghan's Miracle" such a huge success. Please continue to keep Meaghan in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you all for your support. Tim, Kate and Meaghan Grotz Show encouragement during T-Ball games I am writing in regard to a subject very dear to my heart, my child and yours. I am a mother of a 6-year-old who plays T-ball for the Grand Island Little League. I am appalled to see the way the parents of some of these children behave at these games. It seems.that this event is more of a social gathering for the parents than to encourage and support our children. I am so sad to sit in those bleachers and listen to the meaningless conversation that the parents have while their child just got a hit, made it to home base or caught the grounder that came their way. It's ironic how before the games, the parents are so involved giving their "pointers" but after their child has bat, they say nothing. They need to hear the applause, whether they strike out-or hit home runs every time. While, practicing before the game, I see numerous parents with their children, so persistent and fanatical about the way that they are supposed to catch, hit or throw, pressuring them rather than encouraging them, I truly feel that this behavior is only going, to discourage these kids from wanting to try harder. These are 6-year-olds for goodness sakes, all at different skill levels. The coaches realize this and do a wonderful job. I just wonder why the parents don't realize this of their own children? I thought the purpose of enrolling my child in a sport, was to teach her how to be a team player and to build her self confidence, letting her know what a great job she did, whether it was or not, it doesn't matter. Today, 1 heard one child so excited to tell her mom that she caught the ball six times in a row. Her mother's response was "OK, now throw the ball back again." I felt the same disappointment that little girl felt, just by observing the look on her face. Another incident at the same game, during the practice, a mother was playing catch with her son, she kept criticizing the way he was throwing the ball, over and over she kept saying the same things to him. She did not realize how the pressure she was putting upon him made him feel. I hope she finally got it when he threw the ball directly at her. I understand that we live what we have learned, knowing that maybe their parents weren't very encouraging to them, but I would hope that these adults would. realize this and try to break the chain. My husband and I clap after every child bats, regardless of whose team they are on. You wouldn't believe some of the looks we receive as a result. To the parents of the "Little Leaguers" here's a few phrases to add to your vocabulary, not only for your child's benefit, but for others as well: "Way to Go!" "Nice Job!" "Great Hit!" "Good Throw!" "Excellent Catch!". Try to insert the child's name into those phrases too. Enthusiasm and sincerity count also. Don't think that I am being sarcastic, I'm not the perfect parent myself and I am not looking down on anyone's parenting skills, only trying to help you help your children with what I have observed. Thank you to anyone who actually got the message of this. As they say..."They are our future." Michele. DeGeorge Thanks to the Grand Island residents The Disabled American Veterans, Grand Island Chapter 186, sends many thanks to the generous citizens who made a donation to the annual Forget Me Not fund drive. Your contributions will be used to help disabled veterans with transportation to and from medical appointments at the vets hospital and will also be used to help veterans in need. These funds are used locally. The DAV Transportation Network is available to veterans by appointment. For more information, call 862-6544. The Clothing Locker is also maintained at the hospital, where items of clothing in good condition can be donated. Contact Dick Kloc at 862-6544 with Volunteers are needed to drive the vans and the hospital is always in need of volunteers to aide patients to and from their daily appointments at the VAMC in Buffalo. To, volunteer, contact Mark Francis, director of voluntary services, at 862-8667. Paul Kane Chapter 186 Commander Thank you for pitching in We would like to thank everyone who pitched in to make the Grand Crafts on the Island another year of success. Registration and activities for the children were ably handled by Betty Lantz, Debby Laramee, Diane Lipp, and Mrs. Wynne's Grand Island High School Art Club. Linda Tufillaro and Jim Linenfelser provided essential support. We appreciate the talented crafters and organizations who participated this year. Special thanks to our capable committee - Sue Berger, Barb Wilson and Mary Neuhaus. We appreciate all your volunteered time and effort. Without the vision and foresight of former Supervisor Jim Pax, we would not have this beautiful Town Commons Park setting. Congratulations to Brielle Backlund, who is the lucky winner of the guessing game with 462 gumballs. Thanks to everyone who attended and enjoyed a grand time on the Island. Hope to see you next year.
