Come this Saturday, Sept. 11, race fans from all over Western New York will converge on the Buffalo Launch Club to participate in die 27th annual Antique Boat Show and Raceboat Reunion. Site of the oldest powerboat racing club in the U.S., the East River Road facility has a long and storied past, rich in racing history. Local fans have regularly made the trek to Grand Island to see some of international racing's best-known teams, owners and personalities. ; Since the 19705, actual Antique Power Boat Association-sanctioned events in Western New York nave been far and few between. As such, fans have turned to the Vintage & Historic Division to get their boat racing "fix." In fact, the Vintage & Historic Division has ; been the fastest growing class in .j the APB A organization. A Featured Boat One of the feature boats at this j year's "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" j Antique Boat Show and Raceboat j Reunion will be a vintage j hydroplane, the "Canadiana Grand I Prix." j The "Canadiana Grand Prix" was j owned by > Ives "Frenchy" j Charbonneau and it sat in a field for j 15 years before being rescued. The j "Canadiana Grand Prix" is current- j ly owned by Mary Hart and Skip j Rawson of Clayton, NY, and is in j excellent condition. j The hydroplane was built in 1964 by Jerry Longtin who resided in j Quebec, Canada. It has a 26-foot) LOA and weighs approximately \ 3,500 The power plant is a 392 Chrysler Hemi V-8, alcohol engine. The hull was painted white and green and had a big frog on the top front, flexing its muscle. This three-point hydroplane is constructed using the bulkhead and stringer method common to boats of this type. Set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10, 11 and 12 on the Academy Park grounds in the village of Lewiston, Kiwanis organizers are bracing for large crowds of 25,000 to 50,000 and keeping their fingers crossed for good weather as the days approach for the 47th annual Peach Fest. "Hopefully it'll be just like this," said Terry Nobles 2004 Peach Festival chair, of the dry, cool and comfy evening found at Academy recently as preparations were underway. Kiwanians Busy "We're getting there," commented Lewiston Kiwanis President Ernie Krell last week on the hectic activities club members, their wives and Festival volunteers and others have found themselves engaged in over the past weeks.
