"And that's the other thing," he said. "You've got the sound. You've got the sights and sounds. People love to hear that stuff. And the owners, obviously they're very proud of their boats. People love showing their boats, they love talking about their boats as well." At the Buffalo Launch Club last weekend, the boat show drew spectators interested in the sights and sounds of boating history past and present. "There's so much race history that took place here," DeGlopper Peg Holtstein, left, and Rich DeGlopper ride their Onlookers view the classic boats docked at the Buffalo Jersey Speed Skiff on the Niagara River during the Launch Club on Saturday. Woolson The Grand Island Board of Education was treated to a presentation by Dianne Tiede, a teacher at Sidway Elementary School, who has been working as the coordinator to acquire items for the Eco Island Ecology Reserve at Monday's meeting. Tiede said she finally got some teachers to walk the trail where conveniently located educational tapes offer students information about what habitats are in the area. She said there will be a winter and spring tour and that the educational tapes will be modified for students on each tour. Tiede pointed. out some of the new items at Eco Island include a piece of bark damaged by a yellowbellied sap sucker, a piece of wood that had been found on the Island that had been damaged by a beaver, and a small antler. She told members that during the past year, Quality Quest has been supportive of Eco Island and that a spotting scope had been purchased for use at the facility. Teachers Benefit "And the teachers are now being trained on it," she said. Tiede said that Quality Quest also assisted in making new stamping holders for the footprints students use when they are working with the sand. "And a lot of things got a nice cleaning," Tiede said. Trustee Lee Cohen asked what was being done to orient new teachers with regards to Eco Island. "We did not have any new elementary teachers this year," Tiede answered. Cohen commented she felt that Eco Island is under utilized. "This facility can be used all year long," Tiede responded. "This is a neat place and the children enjoy coming through here in all seasons."Tiede said that in the fall when the classes come to the nature reserve, students have the opportunity to see such things as tree seedlings which tell the story of nature's ongoing creation process. In the winter, they get to see the tracks that animals leave as well as where the nests were. In the spring, they get to see how things are beginning anew. "It is quite a dramatic change," Tiede said referring to nature's change in seasons. She said that many of the items found at the facility were not only provided by the school district, but also through the help of the community and different organizations. "This is a unique for the children," she said. "It offers them a hands-on experience."
