Photo by BarM Late Island Has Safe Water Supply GRAND Island's water supply is as safe or safer than any in any other New York state community. "Our water meets or exceeds all regulations of the New York State Health Department," Water Superintendent John Martin said Thursday in retaliation of an area media's story about the town's water treatment. The news story's reference to Grand Island's 48" water intake and the possibility of a chlorine feed line installed at the head of the pipe, is "entirely false," Martin said. "The intake hasn't even been built yet and we are not going to put chlorine into it anyway," Martin said, repeating that all water used in the town "meets or exceeds all regulations of the New York State Health Department." The media story dealt mainly with using chlorine on killing zebra mussels to combat the European shellfish invading the area's souces of water. MEK Island Remembers Its Heroes MEMORIAL Day ceremonies Monday drew a large crowd to honor the town's heroes killed in World War 11, the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. The line of march from the town hall to DeGlopper Memorial Park included members of the American Legion. Disabled War Veterans Post, the Grand Island High School Band and the Grand Island Fire Company. Colonel Thomas W. Sabo, Deputy Commander of the 98th Division Training, US Army, was the guest speaker. "This day our nation remembers our fallen soldiers, sailors, marines and airman with the awareness that words and ceremony cannot repay our debt to these sons and daughters who fought and died for the cause of freedom," Councilman James H. Pax said in welcoming the crowd in behalf of the town board. The largest tribute we can bestow upon our deceased heroes is to uphold the values of freedom and democracy and to live for these ideals for which they died. We must never allow the flame of liberty to die," Pax said. A wreath was placed at the monument in the park. Relatives of the deceased also paid tribute to their fallen kin by placing roses there. The invocation was given by Richard Courthoys, chaplain of VFW Post 9249, and the benediction by Rev. Harold Tyson, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church. MEK School Delay Caused By Bus Vandalism SHERIFF Thomas F. Higgins reports extensive criminal mischief to 50 Grand Island school buses Tuesday morning caused school to be delayed one hour. Approximately 750 quarts of oil were drained from the buses. Deputies Robert Hondzinski and Michael Hilliker reported an unknown number of individuals entered the secured parking area and took off the oil plugs. Due to the amount of the spill, the Erie County Emergency Services Department was called to assist and direct the clean-up. Total damage was estimated at $1,000 and higher costs are possible pending the difficulty of the clean-up. Grand Island School officials stated they will prosecute any and all persons involved in this mischief. According to Deputies, felony criminal mischief and criminal trespassing could be charged.
