[page 22 Fire prevention week page 24 Fire company responds to 2 accidents by Roy Pauley Public Information Office Grand bland Fire Company The Grand Island Fire Company was called out on two accidents within three days this past week. One man was injured in the first accident, and two occupants denied injuries in a second, freak accident on theThruway. Shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, Grand Island Fire Company Rescue personnel responded to a one-car motor vehicle accident on the Beaver Island Parkway near Fix Road. Harold Geiger, 71, reportedly lost control of his vehicle on the rain-slicked roadway. He was trapped in the wreckage after hitting a tree, said Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Koch. Geiger was extricated and treated by fire company paramedics for a head injury, immobilized, and transported to the Erie County Medical Center for additional medical attention. Three days later, on Monday, Oct. 10, firefighters responded to a noontime accident on the southbound 1-190. A passenger vehicle was hit by debris from a tractor-trailer that lost part of its roof when it struck the Bedell Road overpass. Grand Island Fire Chief Greg Butcher confirmed that Margaret Noel, 54, of Niagara Falls, and the truck driver, Robert Justice, 25, of Georgia, both denied injuries when evaluated by on-scene medics. One hundred and thirteen students gathered in the gym to listen to a talk and then exercise to music.Slaying Fit "What does it mean to be fit?" Olivia Belter of Univera asked the Huth Road students. Students answered: •To be healthy" • To stay strong." ; • "To eat healthy foods." •To not go overweight" 1 "Why be fit?" was Belter's next question. Students were ready with their answers: To stay alive," one said. "Because it gives us more energy," j said another. j The youngsters volunteered that they play hockey and soccer, ride bikes and play with their friends to be more fit.
