Stanley Cup fever hits Western New York With the Buffalo Sabres playing their first playoff game since 2001 last weekend, Stanley Cup fever has officially hit Western New York. Not only did the Sabres sell out both of their home games against the Philadelphia Flyers, but hundreds of area hockey fans flocked to the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence on Monday to see the sport's holy grail, the Stanley Cup, up close and personal. Grand Island residents and die-hard Sabres fans Warren and Michele Tater (shown above) made the trip to the mall to have their picture taken with "Lord Stanley's mug." The extremely strong interest in the Sabres showed once again how much Western New Yorkers identify with their hometown teams. A sellout crowd is expected at HSBC Arena on Sunday as the Sabres continue their first-round series against the Flyers. After Wednesday's loss at Philadelphia, Buffalo holds a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series, (photo by Joe Eberlej 'Jazz for Christine' hits a high note by Donna M. Webb "I feel kind of honored. The Lord is working through me through this illness - there has been an outburst of camaraderie and felowship." Christine Ryshkus said this as she reflected on the community's response just a few days before "Jazz for Christine," a fund-raiser held at the Buffalo Launch Club on April 21. Organized by the Friends of Christine, this event raised close to $5,000 to assist her and her husband, Gene Ryshkus, with mounting medical expenses as Christine continues her battle with cancer. The fund-raiser was spearheaded by Dr. David Johnson, a member of the Grand Island Rotary Club. About 150 people came to show their support for these two caring and compassionate people who have done so much to serve the Grand Island community for nearly 10 years. Most residents know Christine and Gene; through their business, the Grand Island Garden Center on AMn Road. What people may not know is that the couple has helped in many ways at many Rotary-sponsored events, including the annual hot dog and cWE sales and the Lobster Fest. Helping with Rotary Rotary President Patty Johnson expressed gratitude and admiration for Christine's assistance. "Last November, Christine chaired our Undie Sunday event, doing much of the organizing via phone while undergoing treatment for her illness. Thanks to her efforts, we collected over 2,000 The Buffalo Launch Club was abuzz last week with a crowd of at least 150 supporters for Christine and Gene Ryshkus.
