The attorney said there is a felony hearing scheduled for Grand Island Town Court on Monday at 11 a.m. Sheriff's Lt. Ron Kenyon is handling the investigation. He said the shooting occurred when an ongoing argument escalated between a group of young people from Grand Island and another group from Tonawanda. "There was an incident about 2 and 1/2 hours prior, about 9:30 p.m. involving some of the people," Kenyon said. He said a ball bat was used to hit one of the cars and there was minimal damage. A couple of phone calls were exchanged, and the young people returned at about midnight Shortly after, deputies received a 911 call of a man being shot. Their common foe is a killer disease, and their bond is the commitment to find a cure. There will be joy in getting together; there will be pride for survivors who have battled the disease with courage; and there will be gratitude to the caregivers who have helped them cope. There will be sadness for those who have lost their fight, and love and remembrance. Luminaria - lighted candles in honor of cancer victims - will Alicia Sommer, honorary survivor, and Peter McMahon and Mary Dunbar- Daluisio. eochairs, are planning for another successful Grand Island Relay by Joe Eberle) Hundreds enjoy return of hydroplane races by Michael J. Owen A little rain on Saturday, yet a beautiful sunny Sunday made for a great weekend of hydroplane racing. Just across Grand Island's east waters at Gratwick Riverside Park in North Tonawanda, "Thunder on the Niagara" took off with a boom for the first time in five years. Spectators along both shores could hear the buzz and enjoy the view as the high-speed boats raced the course. It's pretty exhilarating going 100 mph down the straightaway, your foot to the floor and turning the wheel through the corners, said John Krebs, race organizer and commodore of the Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association. Krebs named his boat "Just Crazy" in memory of the late Martin Prast, a wounded Vietnam War veteran and former Grand Island Town supervisor who was wheelchair-bound after his war injury. "Marty was my godfather, He got me into boating. He meant a lot to me," said Krebs. The Blind Crippled and Crazy Team, Marty's old crew and drivers, also created a special annual award in honor of Prast for those who give 110 percent. Krebs also received this year's Marty Prast Perpetual Award Lauren Malkiewicz gives the hydroplane "Just Crazy" a leg up and big push from the dock, just as driver John Krebs guns the engine. Pit crewmembers Tim Moriarly, Todd Liddycoat and Tony Scoles© are also there in support of the race with "Thunder on the Niagara" at Gratwick Riverside Park in North Tonawanda on Sunday, (photo by Michael J.
