Police say Thomas A. Dodge, 30, was killed after he shot a former girlfriend, Tami Trotmow, 26, outside her residence on Crescent Road. Deputies said Dodge's gray 1992 Pontiac may possibly contain weapons. Town Supervisor Peter McMahon said the Sheriffs Department helicopter was used Monday to fly over portions of Grand Island on Monday, but nothing was found. "I know that between the Grand Island Police, and the Sheriffs Department and the State Police on the Island, that they have driven every piece of road." He said they have also searched parking lots looking for where the car might have been left or parked. "So if s either hidden or not here." Police say Dodge had two guns with him, as well as two pipe bombs in a backpack, when he began shooting at Trottnow, causing three wounds that sent her to the hospital. She was released from Erie County Medical Center the day after the shooting. Paddle Power on the Mighty Niagara Story and photos by Michael J. Owen U.S. Navy Journalist (Ret.) As the day dawned, wisps of fog drifted over the placid waters of the Niagara River. Great blue herons and common egrets busied themselves fishing the shallows around Grand Island and an occasional osprey circled overhead. Thus, began the second year of "Paddles Up Niagara," as hundreds of paddlers assembled at Beaver Island State Park with kayaks and canoes Saturday morning for a 4.6-mile paddle in the beautiful Niagara River. This Niagara River Greenway event showcased a rainbow of color created by the more than 200 boats poised at launch sites. Informative displays were also buzzing with activity, as many of the visitors listened to demonstration experts, tried out different kayaks and enjoyed free paddling lessons. Free Kayak Lessons Dave Brenan of Eastern Mountain Sports had eight staff members on board offering the free kayak lessons. "We showed visitors how to use the kayaks, paddles and safety gear the right way," said Brenan. They were the only organization offering this service. "People were lined up to learn all morning," he continued. "With about 15 minutes of instruction on the average you At Saturday's "Paddles Up Niagara," at Beaver Island State Park, participants launch their kayaks and canoes for a 4.6-mile paddle, beginning at Little Beaver Island. He is Savino William Nanula, the son of former state Sen. Anthony Nanula and Holly Nanula of Grand Island. His family was planning a Mass in remembrance of his grandfather, William Michaels, who died last year. As a tribute to his memory, this angeliclooking, blonde curly-headed boy decided to help Hospice, the group that had helped Michaels, by baking cookies with his mom. On Saturday, July 28, he and his mom baked cookies all day. He even picked out little bags that he helped design to put the cookies in. Holly Nanula explained that she, her son and her mother were in Clayton's Toy Store, and they saw a junior-sized lemonade stand for sale. At first Savino thought it might be a really good way to earn money to buy some of his favorite line of toys, Thomas The Tank Engine. Then, when mother and son discussed the upcoming family get-together in memory of Savino's "Grandpa Bill," the youngster volunteered that he could sell lemonade and give the proceeds to Grandpa. His mother explained that Hospice had taken care of his grandfather, and Savino wanted to raise money for the caregivers who had been so kind to his grandfather. "It's for Grandpa," he told his mother. (Savino's other grandfather, Savino Nanula, is retired and lives in Niagara Falls.) "We decided to make cookies instead of lemonade," she said, because he had made them before - so they did it from scratch. "He got out his little bench" and went to work making assorted cookies. Then he decorated the bags. "He did all the work," his mother said. The sign on the lemonade stand read: "All donations go to Erie County Hospice in memory of my Grandpa Bill."
