Not a bad showing, but on Saturday, Sept. 8, the Buffalo Launch Club will play host to the 30th annual Antique Boat Show and Race Boat Reunion. As of Wednesday, DeGlopper ..saidboat owners had signed up to show 127 boats at the event. "We know there are a lot more coming," DeGlopper added. Aficionados of this element of nautical history consider the boat show to be one of the biggest and best such events in the entire nation. Last year, 188 entrants participated,.including 55 vintage race boats from all eras. Similarly, those in the know consider Grand Island and the Buffalo Launch Club to be home to one of the best and oldest powerboat-racing clubs in the United States. The club, located at 503 E. River Road, is rich in racing history, as some of the finest boats and drivers from the past have raced on this course on the Niagara River. For boat enthusiasts, historians, and even landlubbers of the Island, the Antique Boat Show is a must-see event The show is cosponsoredThe 30th annual Antique Boat Show and Race Boat Reunion will be held this weekend at the Buffalo Launch Club. Native Islanders making wings a hit in Arizona Photos and story by Larry Austin ~ Last weekend's National Buffalo Wing Festival was a homecoming for a family of native Grand Islanders. Judy and Floyd Anderson moved away from the Island after the Blizzard of '77, heading to the Valley of the Sun: Phoenix. They soon bought a restaurant, and saw business boom after they added a then little known Buffalo delicacy, chicken wings, to their usual menu. Judy and two of her four daughters, returned for the Labor Day weekend festival at Dunn Tire Park. The festival drew thousands of wing lovers from the Niagara Frontier, but the restaurants came from places such as Arizona, Los Angeles and Florida, proving that wings are not just a local dish. Judy said the family was the first in 1978 to provide chicken wings in Arizona, "and now it's a sensation all over." It's something the Andersons already knew. Today, the sensation has expanded for the family, who are now the proud owners of 18 restaurants in Arizona with plans for 40 more franchise locations. The restaurant chain, called Native New Yorker, is really a family affair. The four Anderson daughters - Debbie, Sherri, Jami and Above, Judy Anderson is flanked by her daughters, Sherri Lind and Debbie O'Neill, during the National Buffalo Wing Festival Sunday at Dunn Tire Park. Anderson and her husband, Floyd, founded a chain of restaurants, Native New Yorker, that has grown on the strength of its Buffalostyle menu. Webb A sunny morning greeted students on Wednesday as the yellow buses pulled into the parking lot of Huth Road Elementary School. No doubt the mixed feelings that fifth-grader Carly Hand experienced typified what most Grand Island students felt "She was anxious, excited, and sorry that the summer was oyer," according to her mother, Debbie. Principal" Mary Haggerty stepped onto each bus and greeted the children with a warm smile. As of opening day, 478 students were registered, Haggerty said. However, this number changes daily during the first week or two of school. New initiatives After the students reached their classrooms, Haggerty held a "Principal's Tea" for the 25 or so parents on hand. Coffee, tea and doughnuts were available. This is an event Haggerty schedules about once a month to communicate with parents about what is happening at the school and explain any new initiatives. She also welcomed suggestions from parents for topics of future meetings. Haggerty reported that the "Everyday Math Program," which started last year in the fourth grade, will continue this year for the fifth-grade students. Describing it as a "little non-traditional," Haggerty said instructors have been pleased with the results shown on standardized tests. "Last year, we saw a nice bump up in our math scores in third, fourth and fifth grade." When asked if parents with concerns on the methods could request a return to older methods, she replied, "You have to do what is good for your family," Haggerty also suggested that parents should write a note in their student's agenda if a math problem cannot be solved, even if both the parent and child worked on the problem together. This will signal to teachers that perhaps the material needs to be presented in a different way to the class, she added. Haggerty then offered some guidelines for students' nightly homework.
