ISLAND DISPATCH With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY • 773 7676 NIAGARA FRONTIER PUBLICATIONS 24 PAGES 35« VOL. 47 NO. 27 • Sept. 14, 1990 On The Road Again, A Little Longer Island commuters traveling north are spending more time on the road than they want to as rehabilitation crews are back at work on the northbound north Grand Island bridge. Until November or till the snow flies, all traffic is being re-routed to the southbound north bridge causing traffic tie-ups especially during early morning and five o'clock drive times. A final closing next spring will end the reconstruction period and Islanders will have all four bridges operational for several years to come. Photo by BarM Lam Gas Pipeline Issue Gathering Steam THE POSSIBILITY of having a gas pipeline built across Grand Island, heavily protested by town officials and residents, surfaced again last week with the announcement that the two companies involved may agree to construct a single line here. National Fuel has now agreed to support Empire State Pipeline's proposal for the installation which would begin at West River and end at East River where it would cross the Niagara to the mainland. Sponsored by the Coastal Corp. of Houston, Rochester Gas and Electric, and Union Energy, Inc. of Toronto, Empire State wants to bring Canadian gas into this country. The Empire-National Fuel agreement involves supporting each other's applications for the line, now pending before various US and Canadian agencies.Grand Island has been fighting this issue for more than a year. A delegation, including Councilman James H. Pax and President of Grand Island Citizens Against the Pipeline Samuel Akinbami took the fight to Washington where they met with the Federal Energy Commission. "We wanted to make sure that the people of Grand Island are heard in Washington," said Legislator Charles M. Swanick, who arranged the session. "Pipeline A Boon To Northeast" was the headline on a recent area newspaper editorial. But what about heavily populated Grand Island, its environment and its safety, Pax noted in June when State Administrative Judge Walter T. Moynihan recommended the public service commission approve the gas line across the Island. At that time it was expected PSC would reach no decision until early fall. MEK GI Primary Results VOTER turnout was low Tuesday for primary contests held across the county. Grand Island was no exception due to the few contests on the ballot that failed to generate overall interest in going to the polls. The unofficial Grand Island Democratic primary results as of Wednesday are as follows: State Comptroller - Carol Bellamy, 92; Andrew Spano, 55. Congress, 33rd District - Louis P. Corrigan, Jr., 15; Henry Nowak, 148; and John Basar, Jr., 4. Erie Co. Family Court Judge - Sharon Townsend, 44; Timothy Lovallo, 42; James Dillon, 38; Timothy J. Frost, 22; Marjorie Mix, 34. In the Republican contest for Erie. Co. Court, Sharon Townsend mustered 115 votes and Timothy Frost, 31. Congressman Nowak, nominated for a 9th term, was an overwhelming winner for the 33rd District and Dillon the apparent winner of the Democratic race for Family Court. Bellamy was the Democratic winner for State Comptroller. Judge Townsend was an easy winner in the Republican primary for Family Court. Results are unofficial until the Board of Elections does its canvas or offical tabulation of the vote. MEK MAIL TO: Weekend At A Glance FRIDAY CUB SCOUT PACK 425 KICK-OFF MEETING, Huth Rd.
