I'hnio by IWW hurt New Information On Pipeline May Save The Day IN A SURPRISING meeting Thursday, Erie County Executive Dennis Gorski, Senator John Daly, Assemblyman William Hoyt, Legislator Charles Swanick, elected officials from Grand Island, Niagara County and Lewiston, representatives from GICAP (Grand Island Citizens Against The Pipeline) announced their full support toward approval of a new pipeline plan called the Niagara Alternative. The Public Service Commission Wednesday Oct. 24 delayed decision on the Empire State Gas pipeline route so much in question. Received that day by the PSC was a letter from Tennessee Gas Pipeline requesting the commission to review a new proposal. If approved, Tennessee Gas Pipeline's proposed Niagara Alternative plan would have very little environmental impact on Grand Island or Lewiston, as Empire would not be building a pipeline through either municipality. The plan would also eliminate 25.5 miles of new pipeline right-of-way through the WNY area. Tennessee would use its existing Niagara Import Point at Lewiston as well as the bordercrossing facilities already authorized by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Also in attendance at the Thursday meeting were Grand Island Supervisor La Verne Luther, Grand Island Town Councilmen James Pax and James Sharpe, GICAP attorney David Seeger, Wheatfield Supervisor Terry Kuehn, Sam Akinbami and David Watson of GICAP, Niagara County Legislator Art Kroening, Wheatfield Councilman John Cassata and Lewiston Town Clerk Lilly Taddeo. The bi-partisan group urges the PSC to reopen the Empire Pipeline case and allow for a full review of the Tennessee proposal before any formal decision is made. The Erie and Niagara County Legislatures, the towns of Grand Island, Lewiston and Wheatfield will be adopting an official resolution to make this request of the PSC. These communities will also initiate a petition drive and letterwriting campaign to be sent to the PSC in support of the Tennessee Pipeline Application.
