ISLAND DISPATCH With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY * 773-7676 * 35c NIAGARA FRONTIER PUBLICATIONS 24 PAGES 35« VOL. 47 NO. 37 • Nov. 23, 1990 Hooray For Thanksgiving Laura Piccolo, a kindergartener at Huth Road School, belts out a song as part of a Huth Road salute to Thanksgiving held November 15 in the auditorium. All kindergarten classes participated as Indians, Pilgrims or turkeys. Laura, as one of the cutest Thanksgiving Day turkeys, enchanted audience members as she helped act out the story narrated by the teachers. Pholo by BarM Lar* Old Trinity Saved By Majority Vote OLD TRINITY has a new lease on life. The congregation of Trinity United Methodist Church on Whitehaven Road in a 81-65 vote Sunday agreed to rescind a previous decision to demolish the 82 year old landmark.Parishioners in a 72-48 vote also decided to save the entire building including the Sunday school wing. The old church until three years ago was used by the Grand Island Cooperative Nursery School and for church related activities. It was stripped of pews and altar when the new church was built about 25 years ago. Suggested uses now include converting Old Trinity into a community center managed by a non-profit organization. No money from the parish operating or capital funds budget will be used in restoring the old church, the congregation agreed Sunday - only funding already designated for insurance and utilities. Its renovation and possible uses will now be investigated by the administrative board and board of trustees. The Rev. J. Fay Cleveland, program director of the Western New York Conference of United Methodist Churches, presided over the voting. The Rev. Paul E. Robinson conducted the church service which preceded it. Wetlands To Be Discussed Here THE STATE Department of Environmental Conservation will hold informational meetings on proposed freshwater regulations December 5 in Beaver Island Casino from 10 A.M. to noon, 2-5 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. Announced at the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday, the sessions are expected to be of vital interest to Island developers and property owners. Chamber of Commerce President G. Granson Geis said 60 to 70 percent of town acreage already falls under the wetland category established by the federal government. Opposition to the proposed state mapping and classification by the Niagara County Legislature November 16. in the form of a resolution, was based, in part, on the contention that adding 700,000 acres of wetland to the State's protected environment "has not been demonstrated to be needed or necessary."
