Murphy has announced that the Department of Environmental Conservation will take no further action on the proposed changes to freshwater wetland regulations until full consideration is given to several important issues. The decision by DEC Commissioner Thomas Jorling was described in a letter sent to Murphy Feb. 6. "After considering the extensive public comments in opposition to the proposed regulations, it appears that the DEC has recognized that these regulations are not in the best interests of all citizens of the state," Murphy said. Jorling's letter stated in part: "Given the rapidly changing Federal approach to wetlands regulation, the extensive public comments on the proposed regulations (many of which dealt with the State's efforts to align its regulations with the Federal program), and the unexpected public concerns about the impact of DEC's proposalsIslander Becomes Nation's Valentine by Debi Stamler A MISTAKE on a birth certificate made at Kaiser Hospital in California six years ago has brought much national attention to Grand Island and, in particular, one little girl over the past week. Dominique Candace Crocitto, age 6, of East River Road has become a celebrity due to that error. The first grader at Kaegebein School discovered last week that she is legally a boy, because a staff member at the hospital where she was born inadvertently put male on Dominique's birth certificate. The mistake went unfounded until she was informed last Tuesday, February 5, from a local baton competition director, that she was unable to compete because of the legalities involved regarding her gender. The gender error couldn't have happened to a less likely individual as some 48 beauty pageant trophies attest to the fact that she is very much a girl, a talented one at that.
