SERVING THE GRAND ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1944 With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY (716) 773-7676 50C 24 PAGES VOL. 48 NO. 5 • Apr. 26, 1991 Northbound North Bridge To Close THE NORTHBOUND north Grand Island Bridge is scheduled to close Monday, April 29 as work resumes to rehabilitate the north bridges. Northbound traffic will be diverted to the adjacent southbound bridge, which will carry one lane of traffic in each direction between the Island and Niagara Falls. A detour also will be in place, and clearly signed, for northbound traffic to access the Robert Moses Parkway. Traffic delays are expected, especially during peak commuter hours. To minimize delays, motorists can utilize alternate routes, use car-pools or public transportation, avoid peak traffic periods and take advantage of staggered work hours, if possible. The $19.4 million contract includes replacement of the northbound bridge deck and two bridge abutments, repair of the bridge's substructure and painting of both north bridges. Work is scheduled for completion in early June. Luther said Wednesday. The site, adjacent to the town hall, was purchased by the town last year. The town board April 1 approved hiring Empire Soils Investigations, Inc. to develop plans and specifications for asbestos abatement of roof and building materials in the building on the property. Discussion on using or dismantling it will take place after a cost estimate is received, Luther said, indicating, however, that it is expected it may be too high to continue plans to renovate the structure. MEK Island Continues To Fight Pipeline GRAND Island was well represented at the first in a series of pipeline proposals held Monday before the National Energy Board in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
