ISLAND DISPATCH Remember Mother's Day Sunday, May 12th SERVING THE GRAND ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1944 With llu (illAMl ISLAM) \h\VS (.RAN!) ISLAM). \Y tTUii 771 7<i7fi 50C 24 PAGES VOL. 48 NO. 7 • May 10, 1991 School Board Candidates Announced THE NINE candidates Who filed to run for four school board seats include three incumbents, a former town supervisor and a former board member. Seeking election are Norman C. Bauman Jr. of East River Rd., employed by NY River Oaks Golf Course Controversy Headed For Court WHETHER OR not the River Oaks Golf Course can be converted into a private enterprise apparently will depend upon a decision reached in a court of law. The current status of the dispute between the town and golf course owners, Niagara Associates Group, came to light at Monday's town board meeting. Referring to a previous communication to the board concerning the proposed privatization of the course, the Group in another letter dated May 1 advised its previous offer to suspend the process until its validity could be determined was withdrawn "and we will proceed to have an appropriate court decide this matter." Town Attorney Richard J. Couch told the board "attempts to negotiate an equitable settlement have failed. The dispute stems from Niagara Associates, under the title of River Oaks Golf Course, in February announcing its intention to operate the course as a private entity and setting club membership, at that time, at $3500 plus an annual fee of $750 "based on the cost to run the club." The town apparently will base its case on its contention that the golf course and lakes are part of open space for recreation agreed upon when River Oaks was approved as a planned unit development. MEK Eagle Finds Home On Town Gazebo For quite some time Tom and Elizabeth Beach felt that the pointed roof of the Town's Gazebo seemed to need some embellishment. Responding to the need for decoration, they provided the town with an unusual weathervane. And indeed, an eagle nosing into the wind now flies atop the structure. The Beaches have dedicated it to all veterans and to the freedom they have given us. Supervisor Bunny Luther accepted the donation and had Darryl Dodge put it up immediately with the assistance of a cherry picker provided by Exel Electric (Dick and Greg).
