ISLAND DISPATCH . School Board Candidate Profiles Begin this week. See Page 3. SERVING THE GRAND ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1944 With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY (716) 773-7676 50C 24 PAGES VOL. 48 NO. 8 • May 17,1991 Isle School Ballot To Include Propositions GRAND ISLAND school voters June 5 will decide if the district is to purchase four 54 passenger school buses and, in the future, to implement the use of absentee ballots. The bus proposition, if approved, would authorize buying the buses at an estimated cost of $53,135 each or a total not to exceed $212,540. The use of absentee ballots would be consistent with the requirements of New York State Education Law for the election of board members, the annual budget and other school district referenda. In addition to the school budget for 1991-92, voters will ballot on the election of four board members, three terms currently occupied by Cheryl A. Hausner, Nancy Blundell and Theodore Korkuc, and the remaining two years of a three year term formerly held by Pedro Fierro, Jr. and currently occupied on an interim basis by Dean Rech. The terms begin July 1. The proposed budget of $24.1 million, would set the tax rate at $22.54 per $1000 of assessed valuation, an increase of $1.22 or 5.7 percent tax increase.Weather - THE OLD Farmer's Almanac says: May 17-21: Ham, cold. May 22-24: Partial clearing, cold. Bids To Decide Bells Market Fate BIDS FOR the asbestos abatement and demolition contracts for the Bells Market building are being advertised today and will be opened May 29, according to action taken May 6 by the town board. Whether or not to tear down the structure will depend upon quotations received, the board indicated. The property on Whitehaven Road adjacent to the town hall was purchased by the town for $450,000 in 1989. Since then remodeling the market for a recreation center, court house or police center has been considered, plans that may be abandoned if cost of removing asbestos is found to be excessive. The board May 6 agreed to authorize low bidder AAC Contracting of Buffalo to remove asbestos from the former youth center in Nike Base Park for $3,667. That building is in the process of being converted into a maintenance unit.
