Public Hearing To Air Acquest DEIS A PUBLIC hearing in the town hall at 7 P.M., Tuesday, September 10, will "solicit comments - on the DEIS (Draft Environmental Impact Statement)Statement) and particularly on the environmental issues," according to the legal notice appearing in last week's Dispatch. Coalition Joins Pipeline Fight THE NEW YORK State Coalition of Elected Officials has requested the Canadian National Energy Board to stand by its decision to deny TransCanada's proposed Blackhorse Extension, Legislator Charles M. Swanick informed the Island Dispatch Wednesday. Among others supporting the Coalition's views are • Supervisor La Verne C. Luther, Wheatfield Supervisor Terry Kuehn, County Executive Dennis Gorski, Congressmen John LaFalce and Henry Nowak, Assemblyman William Hoyt and Senator John Daly, Swanick advised. In a letter to the NEB in Ontario, the group noted its reasons for concern about the proposed Empire pipeline "are in many respects similar to the Canadian concerns that led to the denial of the Blackhorse Extension." Empire's proposal to cross Grand Island is highly dependent upon the Blackhorse extension being approved by the NEB. The Coalition further advised the National Board it was its understanding "the existing Lewiston import facility is available to meet Empire's needs." "We are also of the opinion that Empire, should it desire to utilize those import facilities, is likely to receive expeditious approvals as needed under New York State and United States law," the Coalition also informed the Canadian Board in its appeal to have the NEB stand by its decision. "Indeed, we believe if TransCanada and Empire would set aside their private interests and expeditiously seek approval to import through existing facilities in Lewiston, the United States public would enjoy the benefits of additional natural gas supplies without shouldering the economic and environmental costs of unnecessary, wasteful facilities," the Coalition stated in its communication MEK CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 MAIL TO:
