With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS 35« GRAND ISLAND, NY 14072 • 773-7676 24 PAGES VOL- 46 NO. 6 • Apr. 21, 1989 Landmark Whitehaven Cemetery Vandalized WHITEHAVEN Cemetery on East River Road fell victim to vandals last week. Damage to 26 headstones was estimated at between $8000 and $10,000. Some of those overturned dated back to the mid 1800s. A $500 reward was established Friday by the Whitehaven Cemetery Association. Legislator Charles M. Swanick and Town Clerk Rita J. DeGlopper. Supervisor Martin T. Prast has since doubled the reward by donating $500 to the cause. Contributions to further enlarge it ere to be sent to the Whitehaven Cemetery Association Fund, c/o of Swanick's office in the Sidway Building on Baseline Road. The Erie County Sheriff's Department is continuing its investigation and would appreciate any information which might result in the arrest and convictionof the persons responsible for the damage on the landmark site. Sheriff Thomas Higgins after surveying it Saturday said laser equipment will be used in an effort to obtain fingerprints from the marker. The reward money will be paid to the person or persons supplying information leading to conviction of the vandals. ME X Plwto by Mary Stewart Hearings To Air Vital Issues WITH AN EYE to having Grand Island grow in an orderly manner, the town board Monday scheduled public hearings to consider local laws aimed at controlling construction of mobile homes and mobile parks and also docks and waterfront facilities. Another public hearing May 15 at 8 P.M. will air the proposed consolidation of both sewer and water districts. In a related issue, recommended by Councilman James H. Pax, the board approved having a comprehensive sewer study prepared by Krehbiel Associates, Inc. at a cost of $41,000. Public input on a law governing mobile home and park building will be sought at the May 14 hearing. If approved, it would regulate the location, design and operation of such facilities, none of which are now part of the town's growth pattern. The law would be applicable to all mobile homes, manufactured homes and mobile home parks established here. Equally important is a proposed local law to be considered at a public hearing May 1 concerning the use, construction or enlargement of docks and boat facilities in residential areas.
