He became the third slate champion in cross country from Grand Island. Marjorie Bessel (1980) and Steve Lunney (1983) were Gl's other state champions. Joe's time was 15:49.7 for the 5K Elma Meadows Golf Course. He took the lead at the 1/2-3/4 mile mark and remained in first place, never pressed, the remainder of the race. Joe has now won all 14 of his races, breaking seven course records. He has been off only a couple seconds from the Elma course record in both the sectionals and state meet. The record would have definitely gone if Joe had been pushed in the 2nd half of these races. The 2nd half of Gl's 1-2 punch, senior Co-Captain Rich Bessel also had a great race. He was 33rd_vith a lime of 17:04.6. Rich and Joe have run cross country together for 7 years with Rich always a steady 2nd man for GI and a top finisher in all races throughout the season. Jim Gorton, who gave up soccer Fire Damages Mobile Home FIRE CAUSED an estimated $26,000 damage Sunday to a mobile home at 2630 Bedell Road. The occupant escaped uninjured, Fire Chief Keith Wood reported. He said a faulty electrical system may have caused the blaze. Wood said Grand Island firemen, alerted Saturday that an overturned boat was drifting in the river off East River Road, found the craft to be an old rowboat of no value.
