ISLAND DISPATCH Make Plans Now To Attend The GI PTA Sponsored Health & Wellness Fair Saturday, April 4 For details, see page 2 SERVING THE GRAND ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1944 With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY (716) 773-7676 28 PAGES VOL. 48 • NO. 52 MAR. 27, 1992 Grand Island Loses An Assemblyman WITH THE PASSING of William B. Hoyt, the country has lost a true statesman and New York, an assemblyman of note. But Bill was more than that to Grand Island. He was a friend to the community always coming to our aid when we needed help or advice. He will be difficult to replace. Assemblyman Hoyt, 54, died Wednesday, after suffering an apparent heart attack in the state Capitol's Assembly chamber, officials said. Hoyt, a Democrat who represented the 144 th Assembly District which includes Grand Island, is survived by his wife, Susan Curran, and four children, "Dill Hoyt, along with Senator John Daly, responded to Grand Island citizens' concerns about the major reconstruction project of all four bridges in the 80s and formed the Grand Island Citizens Bridge Committee. It was through Bill's assistance that changes were made in work schedules, public safety procedures were added and students were bussed off the Island without delay," said Peter A. McMahon, chairman of the Bridge CommiHw. Continuing to reflect on how much Assemblyman Hoyt has done for the town of Grand Island, McMahon said, "Bill was responsible for a grant to the fire company which enabled us to train our 911 dispatchers to provide emergency medical self-help instruction to those calling for emergency first aid." McMahon was chief of the fire company at the lime. Earlier this month, the Island Dispatch credited Hoyt with acquiring a bridge toll device for Island residents, tested here earlier this year, that will enable commuters to drive through toll booths without having to stop and pay for each trip, llial program will begin in 1993.
