ISLAND DISPATCH GI Students Go Back To School Wednesday See Center Pages For Back To School Specials 24 PAGES VOL. 49 • NO. 23 SEPT. 4, 1992 With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY (716)773-7676 SERVING THE GRAND ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1944 Joint School/Town Meeting Addresses Pipeline GRAND Islanders will have one last chance to state their views on the proposed 24 inch high pressure pipeline by Empire on Wednesday, October 7 in the high school auditorium. Superintendent Paul Fields informed the Town Board at its joint meeting with the School Board Monday night that U\e Army Corps of Engineers had requested the use of school facilities to hold a public hearing, beginning at 7 P.M. Approval by the Corps is die final step needed before construction can begin, and die town, according to Supervisor Jim Pax, is hoping that a full environmental impact study and a test boring under the East River will be authorized before dial happens. Pax said that he, Legislator Chuck Swanick and scientists from the Buffalo Museum of Science had walked the proposed pipeline corridor hoping to discover natural features or endangered species to hold up the project, but that nothing unusual was found. Dr. Fields told the Town Board that Empire officials are planning to make an offer to buy sch(X)l land on Staley Rd. (west of the Tlmiway) on the pipeline route. The school board had refused to grant an easement on die property earlier this year. School board member Andy l.ichtenthal was vehement in his refusal to sell the land and odier trustees echoed his sentiments. Town Councilman C.ail Lazenby urged residents to say "No" to Empire officials and refuse them entry to their property. "Don't sign anything," added Pax. The recreation and general master plans were discussed by Councilman Jim Sharpe, who noted that they are scheduled to be adopted in 30 days. Copies of the plans were furnished to school officials for their input. Monies may be available from the Horizons Plan for extending the Beaver Island bike path to the South Bridge as part of the recreadon plan. Sharpe also discussed the possibility of selling up a task force to look into ways of increasing tax revenues and asked for school board cooperation but Dr. McCowan reminded town officials that economic development is not one of the 38 legal responsibilities of the board. After some discussion, President Frank Cannula agreed that the school Town Meetings Tuesday, Sept. 8 Town Board, Town Hall, 8 P.M. Thursday, Sept. 10 Board of Appeals. Town Hall Board Room, 7 P.M.
