With The GRAND ISLAND NEWS GRAND ISLAND, NY (716) 773-7676 20 PAGES VOL. 49 • NO. 47 FEB. 19, 1993 SERVING THE GRAND ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1944 500 Empire Pipeline Hits Another Snag THE EMPIRE State Pipeline Company must file an amended permit application with the State Public Service Commission if it wants to continue its plan to construct a ISS mile pipeline from Canada to Syracuse, including crossing the Niagara River twice en route. Why? Because they are asking for a rate increase due to the cost of the proposed project rising from $82 million to $177 million, more than double previous estimates. A public hearing was held Wednesday and another will be held April 7 in Albany to discuss the changes and whether the state should amend the permit it granted the company March 1, 1991. Opposition to the pipeline continues, especially on Grand Island and in Wheatficld where following an existing route through Lcwiston is being pushed, rather than having it built across our town and through Wheatficld. A spokesman for ANR Pipeline of Detroit, the pipeline parent Chamber To Honor 1992 Citizens Of The Year The Rev. Earle C. King Jr., rector of St. Martinin-the-Field's Episcopal Church since October 1987, will be honored at the Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year Awards Dinner March 18 for his contributions to the community in !'.ic field of religion. Fr. King is active in the Grand Island Ministerium, serving as president from 1990-1992 and has worked with the annual Grand Island CROP Walk since 1986. A 3 1/2 gallon blood donor, Fr. King is also a member of the local Red Cross Board. Prior to graduating from the seminary in 1985 and serving for two years as assistant priest at St. James Church in Batavia, Fr. King did undergraduate work at Eastman School of Music, graduate work at Oklahoma University and was assistant professor of organ at the University of Texas. Fr. King and his wife, Paula, are the parents of two children, Andrew and Christopher. Susan E. Fleming-Brusino, who received Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the State University College at Buffalo, has been associated with the Grand Island School District for 17 years. A teacher of math, science and reading in a multi-graded team for the first three years, Ms. Fleming-Brusino for the next 14 years worked with seventh graders in development reading classes and corrective reading groups. For the past five years, she has served as reading teacher on (he Middle School's A-team as well as being involved with the girls intramural program (for 15 years) and is currently advisor for the School's Readers Club. Ms. Fleming-Brusino has been an adult education instructor for 15 years and a summer school teacher for the Title 1 program at Kacgebcin School and for math and reading skills at the Middle School. She is a member of Zonta Club, NYS United Teachers, American Federation of Teachers, Niagara Frontier Reading Council, International Reading Association as well as several other organizations. Russ Certo, a graduate of Quinnipiac College with a degree in physical therapy, is also a graduate of Grind Island High School. Russ has also completed all requirements needed to become board certified in orthopedics by the American Physical Therapy Association, one of only 200 in the US to have done so. He was Invited to Seoul University Hospital by the Korean ' Physical Therapy Association to teach orthopedic physical therapy at its national convention. Russ is a member of the Rotary Club, Town Recreation Advisory Board, Co-Chairman of the Island Charity Golf Classic and has coached in the Island soccer leagues. Russ and his wife, Elizabeth, have three children, Kaitlin, John Russell and Benjamin. Other awardees will be recognized in subsequent issues of the Dispatch.
