P ( 111* »M ' '" . 20 PAGES VOL. 50 • NO. 19 AUG. 13, 1993 SERVING THE GRAND ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1944 Controversial Teacher's Contract Passed by Donna LoPresti AFTER A heated exchange between two distinct factions of tbe school board that carried over into an executive session at Monday night's Grand Island Board of Education meeting, tbe board voted 4-3 in favor of a contract that will give teachers a wage increase totaling 10.7S percent over three years. The Grand Island Teachers. Association voted 163-3 in favor of tbe contract Friday, July 30. The three-year contract, which is retroactive to July 1992 when the last contract expired, calls for a wage increase of about 4 percent the first year, 3.75 percent the second year and 3 percent the third year. Tbe teachers rejected a proposal last spring calling fo. increases of 4 percent during each of two years. Also featured in the contract is a health care program, a retirement incentive program, Benefit Trust, 125 Flexible Spending Plan and more shared decision-making between the administration and district. Voting against the contract were trustees Norman W. Bauman Jr., Michael Dlugosz and Frank J. (-•sL.ll/.0.
