Photo by M«ry Stewart No Town Board Meeting Monday THE Town Board will not meet again in general session until the first Monday in March. The Feb. 21 session has been canceled because town officials will be attending the annual State Association of Towns' three-day forum in New York City. MEK Greco Named To Planning Board FRANK F. Greco is the newest member of the Grand Island Planning Board. Recently appointed to fill a vacancy, Greco was chosen from a field of four who applied for the position. The West River Parkway resident has a degree in chemical engineering and is employed by Dupont Co. in the area of engineering and construction oversight Greco is to finish out the term of Jeffrey Stults who moved from the Island. The term expires Dec. 31, 1995. MEK Chamber Of Commerce To Salute Outstanding Islanders THE GRAND Island Chamber of Commerce will honor 13 town residents at its annual Citizens of the Year awards dinner Thursday, March 24, in the Buffalo Launch Club. To be recognized for outstanding 1993 community service at the 28th annual ceremony are Florence Davis, John Simon, James Szafran, Monsignor Richard Cahill, Donald Burns, Larry Play lair. Paul and Chris Sipson, James Sharpe, Don and Barbara Anderson, Richard Crawford Sr. and Stacy Schroeder. Florence Davis, soon to celebrate her 100th birthday, will be honored as Grand Island's Senior Citizen of the Year. An active member of the Golden Age Club, she is often a participant in the noonday luncheon programs. She is an avid gardener and enjoys keeping her greenhouse on West River Road in perfect order. Monsignor Cahill will be recognized in the field of religion for his leadership as pastor of St. Stephen's Church, his work within the local Council of Churches and his prominence as a Christian leader in the community. Philip Buchanan, chairman of the Chamber selection committee and a past president, this week also announced the following information about the other honorees. In business, John Simon, chosen as outstanding businessman in 1993, operates his own service plaza, convenience store and fuel hauling business on Grand Island Boulevard. He is an active Chamber member and was a leader in the establishment of the former Grand Island Business Association. In education, James Szafran, a Grand Island High School teacher of prominence, oversaw the development of the solar greenhouse at the Ransom Road school. In the "special" category, Don Burns will be recognized for his musical talents which he has shared countless times over the years without charge for the benefit of many Island organizations. In recreation, Larry Playfair, a member of the Town Recreation Advisory ward, helped organize the golf classic which raised $15,000 for the development of Veterans Park and has also worked on other worthy causes. In youth service, Paul and Chris Sipson, founders of the Son Light Singers, have also given years of service to the Trinity Church choir group, open to young people of all denominations. In government. Councilman James Sharpe, elected to a second term in November, spearheaded development of the proposed new master plan. He is also overseer of the Cable Committee and deputy town supervisor. In community service, Don Anderson for years was an active town fireman and on the fire company's board of directors. Barbara Anderson, active in the Ladies Auxiliary, operated a food catering business and has worked for St. Stephen's Church and in Catholic Charities drives. In economic development, Richard Crawford Sr. is immediate past president of the Chamber of Commerce, and will be honored for his service as executive director of the Economic Development Committee which produced increases in town tax revenues by establishing new and expanded business here. In the category of outstanding athlete, Stacy Schroeder, through her athletic prowess, has brought honor and recognition not only to herself but the community as well. She is an Olympic team shot put thrower. Tickets for the awards dinner are available at the Chamber of Commerce office or may be obtained from chamber directors.
