Nearly 100 youngsters attended the festivities which began with Anne Marie Jason, a story-teller from the Spin-A- Storytellers of Western New York. The two town officials are among a group of Islanders who will be spending some time Sept Ist in the "jail" at Fantasy Island. Several prominent Grand Island business people have received similar summonses. It's all part of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Western Roundup sponsored by Fantasy Island. Those "jailed" will remain behind bars until specific amounts of funding to aid the Association's work are received. Sounds tike fun and it's all for a very good cause, Pax said in accepting his assignment Sharpe agreed. MEK Great Lakes Beach Sweep Taps Environmentalists THE 1994 Great Lakes Beach Sweep is scheduled for 10 A.M. to noon Saturday, Sept. 17. Thirty-three countries are included in this international event sponsored by the Center for Marine Conservation, Washington, DC. Information gathered by volunteers is entered into a data bank to track where marine pollution is coming from and spur changes in packaging materials. This year, the Great Lakes portion of the international cleanup is sponsored by the Aquarium of Niagara. The aquarium will coordinate efforts throughout the five Great Lakes and set up different volunteer groups to encircle the Great Lakes basin. In Niagara, Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, the effort on the 100 miles of shoreline plus creeks and other waterways will ts coordinated by Sharon Trcmbath of Evans. The contingent covering the Lake Erie portion of this immense undertaking consists of more than 1,500 volunteers from age three to 85 who are willing to spend two hours picking up and logging 80 different types of shoreline trash. In 1993, in excess of 20,000 pounds of trash was removed from our shoreline. Articles on the project have been in Parade magazine, National Geographic, Good Housekeeping and other journals. In May, 1994, the event was awarded the Environmental Protection Agency's Region II Quality Award. For more information on the clean-up project or to volunteer, call Councilwoman Marion Fabiano at 773-3485.
