In making his announcement, Hoyt reported that less than four weeks after his visit to Island project sites with State Transportation Commissioner John Egan, he learned from NYSDOT Regional Director Robert Russell that engineering staff from the Region S Highway Maintenance Division had plotted the .6 mile section of the bike path from its current terminus at Red Jacket Road to the Thruway Authority's pedestrian pathway at the south Grand Island bridge. Hoyt also revealed Aug. 24 that the Department of Transportation will not utilize the $20,000 local initiative grant Senator John Daly had appropriated for the pathway in 1988. "The department will construct the path using agency resources," Hoyt said. "In effect, this is a supplementary grant to Grand Islanders for the additional pathway implementation or enhancement." Photo by Mary Stewart Vandals Hit Nike Base Buildings THE GRAND Island Golden Age Center and Recreation Department offices were broken into sometime Friday evening or early Saturday morning. Vandals smashed windows in both buildings to gain entry. A typewriter and adding machine were taken from the senior citizens' facility. "Some loose change" was the take at the recreation office where three windows were broken. Undisturbed was Reality Cafe, the youth center which operates as part of the Help Center program in the same building as the Recreation Department MEK Town Meetings: Tuesday, Sept 6: • Town Board Meeting, 8 P.M., Town Hall New Town Regulation Allows Larger Storage Sheds WITH SUMMER rapidly drawing to a close, thoughts are turned toward snow blowers, sleds and other winter equipment. It also means finding places to store all of those summer items such as the lawn mower, gardening tools, patio furniture, hoses, camping equipment and more. For many homeowners, this has meant finding as much room as possible in that storage shed in the corner of the back yard. Recent action by the Town Board may make that storage headache a bit more bearable. A proposal presented by Councilman Gail J. Lazenby, and adopted by the board in August, calls for allowing homeowners to construct an "accessory structure" shed of up to 140 square feet, up from 100 square feet, without the need for a building permit or payment of any town fees. The regulation still mandates a location permit which is easily secured from the building department. The old 100 square foot requirement had been on the books for a number of years and had become a source of irritation for lots of homeowners. "Island property owners deserved a break on this one," Lazenby said. "Considering that so many more homeowners have riding mowers and snow blowers, the additional square footage can make lots of difference." Anyone with questions regarding the building of a new storage shed or increasing the size of a present shed should contact the town's building department at 773-9600 for assistance. Buffalo Group To Market Island Commerce Center DEVELOPMENT of the Grand Island Commerce Center, the multiuse park proposed by Acquest Properties Inc., is moving ahead. According to Business First, Acquest has retained Buffalo Real Estate Group to market the 144--acre project along the west side of 1-190 between Long and Bedell roads. The Town Board as long ago as December, 1991, approved having Sewer District 6 established by the developers. Planned to be constructed in three phases, the first one would include 1,100 feet of roadway into the commercially zoned complex. The area currently includes Occidental Chemical Corp. Research Center and the former Dunlop Corp. executive offices. Research and development companies, local and international, are now being sought as tenants for the park. MEK Voters May Decide Sales Tax Issue ERIE COUNTY voters may decide whether the eight cent sales tax is to continue, according to action taken last Friday by the Erie County Legislature. A proposed charter agreement will be considered at a 10 A.M. public hearing Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the Rath Building before County Executive Dennis Gorski. If he signs it, it will be voted on as a referendum at the Nov. 8 election. If approved, the 1% point surcharge will be extended when legislators approve the county budget in December. The special legislature meeting last Friday was called by Chairman Leonard R. Lenahan. MEK WEATHER: The Old Farmer's Almanac says • Sept. 2-3: Sunny, heat wave. Sept. 4-7: Rain, cooler. Sept. 8-9: Clearing, mild.
