Planner To Discuss Master Plan Implementation PLANNING specialist Eric Gillert of URS Consultants will discuss implementation of the Town Comprehensive Plan 7 P.M. Thursday, November 3 in Kaegebein School Auditorium. This meeting is being co-sponsored by the Conservation Commission of Grand Island and Quality Quest Coalition, and it is open to the public. Mr. Gillert was the project manager responsible for managing the preparation of revisions to the Town's 23 year old plan. Revisions focused on matching future development to the availability of existing infrastructure and natural carrying capacity of the Town's natural systems. Identification and preservation of critical open space resources were critical to the plan. Eric Gillert has 30 years of increasingly responsible experience as a county planner and a planning consultant. Locally he managed staff completion of a planning framework, development plans, planning guidelines and a GEIS for the 90 mile Lake Erie and Niagara River shoreline. The plan coordinated the planning policies for nine waterfront communities. The Horizons Waterfront Commission adopted it in 1991. Many awards have come his way, the most recent being the 1994 Planning Education Award from the Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association, Town of Grand Island. Isle Ghost Story Bears Repeating DOES THE ghost of a little girl, supposedly burned to death in a fire here long ago (or so the story goes), haunt Holiday Inn' on East River Road? The tale, first related shortly after the inn opened, continues to be told. But the names of those who first reported seeing the little ghost seem to have been lost in the telling! The so-called fire victim has been described as a small girl in a red nightgown. Lately, the name "Tanya" Nice has been added to the story. True, the Nice family once lived in a house on the site. John Nice was elected Grand Island's first supervisor in March 1853. The home, however, was built at the time the Whitehaven Settlement flourished in the 1830s. The last tenant of the landmark was Riverhaven Lodge, a restaurant demolished after an early morning fire in 1963. No one was injured or burned to death in that blaze. But the ghost story continues to be repeated, especially around Halloween. Town Police Offer Halloween Safety Tips THE GRAND Island Police Department would like to remind parents of the following trick or treating safety tips for their children: • Trick or treat only in familiar neighborhoods. • Never trick or treat alone. • Carry a flashlight or wear rcflectorized clothing. • Remember to check all "goodies." In the case of emergencies dial 911. Time Changes Saturday Night EARLY MORNING light and early evening darkness becomes the norm when daylight savings time officially ends Sunday morning at 2 A.M. Saturday night revelers will welcome die extra hour of sleep as clocks are turned back one hour. Remember the semi-annual clock change before retiring Saturday night or you may be too early for Sunday school or that long standing breakfast date.
