Monday morning halted traffic on the Thruway between the south and north spans for hours. Involved was an Odds & Ends tractor-trailer and a 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo. The trailer dragged the car up the bridge approximately 300 ft. against the rail before the driver of the truck could disconnect his cab from the trailer. Both the tractor and automobile were on fire and it took till nearly 11 A.M. to contain the fire and move the wreckage. Both vehicles were a total loss. A backhoe was used to help remove the contents from the trailer to quicken fire containment efforts and a highlift was utilized to remove the trailer from the bridge. When firemen arrived on the scene,, the driver of the car, Nicholas J. Catanzaro, 33, of Niagara Falls was out of his car. Paramedics treated him and he was transported to the hospital by Niagara Ambulance where he was later released. Robert R. LeClair of Massachusetts, driver of the truck, was charged with unsafe lane change and Catanzaro was ticketed for driving with suspended license plates. Other fire companies aiding at the call were Town of Niagara Fire Company which proviced a water tanker and Sheridan Park Fire Co., which provided one stand-by pumper at Grand Island headquarters. Officer Skip Mrkall, who was in charge, said 26 GI firemen were on the scene. During this incident, another auto accident with minor injuries occurred on the southbound north bridge at approximately 7:30 A.M. State troopers and Erie County deputy sheriffs directing traffic at one point were joined by Niagara County deputies stationed at the Buffalo Aye. side of the bridge. Town Awaits Zoning Request From Southpointe MOVING AHEAD with the 284 acre Southpointe project, proposed in the Staley-Baseline- Love road area, will require the developers to apply for rezoning, Supervisor James Pax said Wednesday when questioned about the status of the development. "What they propose will require rezoning and a public hearing," Pax said. "There is also the question of a sewer district to be addressed. The property is not in a district." "I suggested back in 1992 that Southpointe contact the town about rezoning before spending a lot of money on trying to sell the project to the said, adding "There is also the question of how the projects fit in with the new master plan." Pax concluded by saying, "There is nothing official to report about the development from the town's point of view. We are waiting to hear from the developer." The Southpointe Community Times, the latest pamphlet issued by consultants for Co-operators Development Corp., the developer, contains a list of questions and answers concerning plans for the proposed use of the land. Copies are available at the Southpointe office, 1980 Whitehaven Rd. Planning Board Recommends Subdivisions THERE WILL be two new subdivisions underway if the town board agrees with recommendations reached by the planning board at Monday night's meeting. The planners gave the green light of approval for the eight lot Forest Creek Subdivision on Whitehaven Road and four lot Grand Meadows to be built on the north side of Fix Road east of Alt Blvd. Also recommended for approval was a two unit duplex at 2927 Grand Island Blvd. and a site plan for a boat storage building at Anchor Marina at 1501 Ferry Rd. The planners, however, did not favor a request for a special use permit to allow keeping five horses and for an agricultural business to operate at 555 Ransom Rd. requested by Leo A. Hopkins. The board based its decision on its belief that "a nursery is the type of business that should be located in a Business-2 zoning area. The planners also agreed "keeping horses and growing hay, grain and flowers can be permitted in a residential zone such as Ransom Rd. if there are no signs erected on the premises and if no retail sale of agricultural products is conducted on the site," Chairman John Trianda reported. MEK Special Use Permit Approved With Restrictions THE TOWN board at a 4 PJvl. special meeting Tuesday approved issuing a special use permit for property at 555 Ransom Road with restrictions limiting its use. Specifically they are keeping five horses, growing hay and grain and growing plants, flowers and trees. The permit further restricts that the owner of the property must maintain his residence on the property, may not expand operations beyond the two (current) poly covered greenhouses and existing barn or any new structure with comparable square footage. Other restrictions call for the property being in full compliance with back-flow requirements by Oct. 15 and be acceptable to the town water department; also a seasonable sign is to be used in accordance with the existing sign permit from May l-July 15 only and that lawful disposal of horse manure is required. The board Tuesday also agreed to hire two part-time seasonal recreational attendants. Jack Blaha and Nicholas Dodge. MEK Town Meetings: Monday, May 15: • Town Board, Town Hall, 8 P.M.
