According to Debra Remson, director, the play was the traditional tale but the scenery was somewhat "off the wall." Activity prior to the performance included last-minute preparations. Photo by Barni Lare Getting ready for Easter Youngsters in the YWCA after-school program at Kaeeebein School spent their time wisely March 21, as they made candy to deliver to the YWCA Residence Aot.it Care Facility in Buffalo and the Riverwood Health Care Center on Grand Island. Tops Market donated 50 lbs. of melting chocolate, candy molds and two members of their personnel to handle the melting and oversee the processes of molding. In addition to making the candy, the children dipped cookies and pretzels into the chocolate and : .■ peanut clusters. Jelly chicks were also coated. The rule was to refrain from licking your fingers and it was .tough to wait until they were finished. But the amateur can..., makers did a good job, even though it turned out to be pretty messy. The activity was coordinated by Bey Thomas and her assistant, Carol Hamlin. Photo by Barbi [.are School budget vote dates may change by Lee Cohen ALTHOUGH THE school board is scheduled to hear Superintendent Haul Fields recommendations regarding the 1996-97 budge. April 15 he cautioned at Mono ,• night's school board meeting that there are gaps in both expenditure and revenue information and that he feels uncomfortable about making a recommendation at that time. The federal budget, still not approved, impacts the state budget, also not finalized, which in turn impacts local school districts, he said. The board will approve the BOCES budget April 23 and had been scheduled to approve the school district budget on that date as well, but that vote will probably be postponed to April 29. The public vote on the budget is scheduled for June 5 but Fields noted that vole could legally be held later in June. Business Administrator Larry Schaller presented the business ofl.ce budget. He reported that contractual costs are down and legal services are down about $10 000 based on this year's figures, as is unallocated insurance. In the personnel area about $5000 less has been budgeted for substitutes, but retirement costs are up, based on recommendations from the state, as are workers compensation costs. The district is exploring the possibility of selfinsuring, Schaller reported. Sue Gill noted that less had been budgeted for textbooks and was concerned that the district continue to maintain its policy of updating texts. Schaller said the district is in good condition regarding books and that more materials were coming through on computer. Sheriff reprimands Island "tank" driver THOMAS Gould, a highranking member r*f the Erie County Sheriff's Dept. Reserve Division, got into a bit of trouble on the eve of St. Patrick's Day when he allegedly drove a collector*. ,iem "tank" on a Grand Island road. It happened when another resident called'sheriffs deputies and complained about it. Actually it was World War. II memorabilia, part of his collection which includes many other items that he stores in Buffalo warehouses. When deputies questioned Gould, he is reported to have shown his sheriff badge. The island resident claims he did not "flash" the badge but showed it to them when he opened his wallet to take out some identification. All of this prompted Sheriff Thomas F. Higgins to give Gould a vehicular summons (driving .1,1 unregistered vehicle), a verbal reprimand ("If he does it again, he won't have the badge for long"), and a warning. Gould in the past has donated three armored personnel carriers and bought uniforms for the SWAT Team. He has been honored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Buffalo Police for technical assistance he provided to their Special Weapons and Tactics teams. He has also been honored by the Sheriff's Department. A lieutenant colonel in the New York National Guard, Gould ains the Innovative Chemical Corp. and is one of the commanders in the Sneriffs Reserve Division of more than 100 businessmen, scientists and other experts who assist the department.
