Business Expo promises full house Investigation nets five arrests Five Grand Island residents were arrested last Friday night after a two month investigation by the Erie County Sheriff's Department Narcotics & Intelligence Bureau. In conjunction with the Buffalo Police Department, Erie County Case Officer Conrad Gospodarski and Detective Alan Rozansky assisted by Lt. William Smith and Detective Edward Nciman executed a search warrant at 1301 Ransom Rd. The officers had been actively investigating reports of alleged drug trafficking by Victor Cracknel), 24, and others from the residence. Crackncll had a history of criminal activity, Gospodarski said. Officers entered the apartment where the five were silting in front of the television drinking malt liquor. One male attempted to stuff a bottle of pills into the sofa. Also found were hallucinogenic mushrooms, numerous amounts of tablets of a suspect drug called Ecstasy with a street value of approximately $35 to $40 each, and 566 unidentifiable tablets and capsules. Methylencdiox Melhamphetamine (MDMA) also known as XTC is a synthetic hallucinogen (hat was developed in 1914 as an appetite suppressant. It remained relatively anonymous until the 1960s and 1970s but was widely used until the 1980s. It became a controlled substance in 1985. It is popular mainly among 18 to 30 year-olds. 5th Annuo! event gets town sponsorship by Dcanne Bartha When visitors enter the sth Annual Business and Community Expo next weekend, they'll be joining a sold out crowd of 34 Grand Island businesses displaying their wares and services. Scheduled for 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Grand Island Fire Hall in conjunction with the Taste of Grand Island, the Expo has grown from 18 participating businesses (o full capacity at the fire hall. It began al the Buffalo Launch Club, then moved two years ago to the Holiday Inn. This year's event has the blessing of the Town of Grand Island board. At Monday night's regular meeting, Supervisor James Pax presented $500 to the Chamber of Commerce, designated for the town's co-sponsorship. Pax also proclaimed the week of October 13--19 as Grand Island Business Week. Also sponsoring the Expo are Red Jacket Travel and Niagara Frontier Publications. Red Jacket Travel will be giving away a night in Toronto with two show tickets. NFP is gathering information on the participating businesses for a special pull-out business review section in next week's Dispalc/i. Final deadline for business profiles is Monday, Oct. 14. Visitors to the event will be able to enjoy the magic of Scoltic Mohan. On Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Mohon will perform a half hour show and do magic tricks around the Expo throughout the rest of the day. Judy Scibella, director of Belter Living Center will be conducting a seminar on Natural Stress and Fain Reduction at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. The alternative therapy is learning to use the Earth's natural energy. She will be doing some demonstrations on balancing and enhancing your body's energy. Also, mini massage roll-outs will be given along with a focus on Nikken products. Two musical groups from the high school and middle school will be performing both days. As a spin-off to the continued support of local businesses. Councilman Richard Crawford has spearheaded the efforts toward forming a small business council. "Between this donation (from the town) and the business council being formed, it's a sign of good relations between the town and small business on Grand Island," Rod Reisdorf, owner of Mr. Best Wrench and coordinator of the event. Reisdorf issued a formal thankyou to the town on Monday. Reisdorf can be found during the event at Booth #14 to answer any automotive questions. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
