VOLUME LXVI, NUMBER 8 Administration, USA senate reorganize shuttle system an instrument for self defense or through the "buddy system"; • "Each van has an effective communication system to reassure that the driver can remain in constant contact with home base." "The new shuttle system shows that the school administration and Public Safety are committed to student concerns about safety." —Jeffrey Pirrone USA President • "Its hours of operation will be changed to 4 p.m. until 2 a.m.; As the USA proposal states, the shuttle system would be organized more like a bus system with a set route. This proposed reorganization would take the following form: The Undergraduate Student Association (USA) passed a resolution last Tuesday requesting that the administration of Canisius College reorganize the shuttle service run by the Department of Public Safety. This resolution was proposed in response to last week's shooting incident involving a Canisius student on the corner of Hedley and Meech. According to Penelope Lipps, director of Admissions, "We make a big push during Open House. We think of it as a very good event for students who are at the point of deciding what colleges they're going to apply to." She added, "It gives students the chance to really look us over. Open House, scheduled for Nov. 18, represents one of the biggest events that the College uses to recruit potential freshmen for next year; it is also one of the last opportunities that the Office of Admissions has to do so, since applications for admission begin to accumulate in December.Since the robbery and shooting of Peter Dolan last week on the corner of Hedley and Meech, some concern has been raised over the safety of students in the campus and surrounding neighborhood. Particularly concerned are the prospective students considering applying to Canisius and their parents. by David Colvin Griffin News Reporter Campus safety addressed as Open House approaches At this point, they'll have included Canisius in their list of potential colleges, and they'll use the Open House as a means of deciding whether to apply." About four hundred high school students have registered to participate in Open House. In the past, the enrollment rate of individuals who attended the Open House was high. With the recent incident, fears have arisen that perhaps some of these prospective students and their parents could be "frightened" away from Canisius and stop considering it as a college choice. Already, at least four cancellations of Open House registration have occurred. While this may not seem like a large number, it could pose a significant problem to the College if this represents the general feelings of prospective students for the year or years to come. "I don't want to be an alarmist, but we're concerned and we're keeping a close eye on everything that is happening, and we're trying not See Open House page 3 According to USA President Jeffrey Pirrone, "this resolution was thought out by a strong representation of student leaders." An ad hoc senate committee met to draft this proposal on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Pirrone submitted this proposal to College President Rev. • "No less than three vans would be in operation at any given time during said hours; • "Each shuttle driver would be provided with an appropriate amount of protection, be it with Pirrone stated, "The new shuttle system shows that the school administration and Public Safety are committed to student concerns about safety." Public Safety has instituted the "New Shuttle Program" in response to this proposal. This new program will utilize two vans that will operate seven days per week with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Breaks. The first van, which will run from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., will primarily follow a designated route from the Student Center, to the Blue Cross Ramp, to the Health Science Center, to the Koessler Athletic Center, to the Old Main Lot and back to the Student Center. The second van, which will run from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., will serve as an individual pick-up within the operational boundaries of the campus as well as Main/Delavan, Campion Hall and the 1908 Building.
