MPEX John Hurley is the new vice-president for College Relations and the General Counsel for the college. The Board of Trustees finance committee meets on October 1. Among those slated to attend are College President Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. and every college vice-president. Canisius College has strong alumni who help through monetary donations as well as by giving students opportunities during and after college. Students are prepared for being alumni throughout their time as students. Hurley explained it best, saying, "You are a student for only four years, but you are an alumnus forever." Fr. Cooke's vision for the college is one that is strongly agreed with by Hurley, who feels that for over 20 years he has not seen "a vision so clearly articulated as it is now." The college is made up both of students and alumni and Hurley would like to see the connection between the two become stronger. He wants to try and become a part of student's activities while fullfiling his duties as vicepresident for College Relations. lations Office. J. Patrick Greenwald has primary responsibilty for this campaign, with the assistance of Brian Nevins and Larry Carroll. Hurley is responsible for making sure it goes along smoothly and productively. This campaign and other areas in the College Relations office raise money to make the college affordable to students as well as to make technological improvements as the years go on. Since graduation, Hurley has held many influential positions at Canisius including chair of the alumni division ofthe Annual Giving Campaign, co-chair of the As a Canisius student, Hurley was active on campus, involved in student government, DiGamma, WCCG and was an editor of The Griffin. He was also involved in the athletic deptartment, writing copy for the college football and basketball programs. In his junior year, he was asked to help initiate the Independent Student Coalition. Hurley continues to be an active alumni. Hurley received his B.A. in English and History as a 1978 summa cum laude graduate of Canisius. He later went on to Notre Dame Law School and has since been practicing law for 16 years, working for a time as a partner with Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber, one of Buffalo's largest and oldest law firms. The position of vice-president for College Relations changed hands over the summer. Mr. John J. Hurley now holds the position formerly filled by Mr. Edward A. Engel. The general counsel position is new for the college. It has not proved to be a very time-consuming role as of yet. The purpose of the position is mainly to help centralize all the legal aspects of the college. Hurley's role in the Capital Campaign is a result of it being coordinated out of the College Re- Hurley's involvement with various parts of the college through the years has enabled him to remain involved on and around campus. He would have been vicechair for the Board of Regents had he not taken the position of vicepresident for College Relations. In his new vice-president position, Hurley is responsible for all Canisius fundraising, working with the Capital Campaign, Annual Fund, grants, Planned Giving, PR and publications to raise money. President's Council of the College's campaign, president of the Alumni Association, vice-chair of the Board of Regents and chair of the president's Council Executive Committee. When Hurley heard about the position of vice-president for College Relations, he knew it was time for a change and that this would be that change. "Every club has the right to defend themselves to the senate," he asserted, revealing plans to alert clubs by, at the latest, the Thursday before their budgets come up for discussion. It was suggested during the course of the meeting that more student representatives would have been present had they known sooner that their budgets would be up for proposal. The accusation of "short notice" was voiced frequently, a problem that Nichols expects to eliminate in the future. increased by approximately $4,000 Nearly every club represented received at least a portion of the additional money they requested. Perhaps the most notable increase in funds was that of the Residence Hall Association (RHA). With president Dave Hoffman as its spokesman, the group's funds In addition, budgets were divided into clusters with titles such as Arts and Music, and Social Sciences in an effort to make more efficient use of meeting time. The majority of the budgets were passed together in these clusters. Individual attention was given to those cases in which representative club members had come to personally petition for more money. Nearly 15 students were present in the audience, including representatives from Chorale, the Quadrangle and the Zoological Society, as well as students interested in running for future senate positions, such as freshman Greg Heeb. Acknowledgement was also attributed to Sarah Chlebowski, a former USA senator, for her organizational help to the Finance Committee. Nichols credits this improvement in part to multiple proofreadings of budget figures. "The numbers for the budget packets were reviewed several times to make sure that they were accurate, and then the final review came even after the packets had been copied," he asserted. Great care was taken to eliminate the possibility of typographical errors. "It ran a lot smoother last night," stated Jon Nichols, USA Finance Committee chairman, speaking of this week's meeting. "Obviously you just can't compare [the two meetings]." A great deal of progress was made at the Tuesday, Sept. 23 meeting of the Undergraduate Student Association (USA), with 25 club budgets passed. The well-run meeting was a vast improvement over the apparent confusion of last week's gathering.
