The main goal is to make students understand what characterizes sexual harassment and to make them feel comfortable reporting it when they feel they have been victimized. Another desire is that the new policy will "create a level playing field," one in which both the accuser and the accused are treated fairly. An example of this, noted Hurley, can be found with respect to retaliation. "Experience is the best teacher and we've had some experiences with the old policy that have caused us to look at the procedures and say, 'well, they didn't really work out to cover that particular instance.'"improved one. "We've made an effort to streamline and clarify the procedures that are to be followed in the event that there is an incident involving sexual harassment. There was some concern about how the process worked (regarding) confidentiality of records and the composition of hearing panels. In the interim, the College will continue to handle any complaints of sexual harassment according to the guidelines presented in the old policy. It is Hurley's belief, however, that the new policy will be an Before being adopted, the policy will likely be reviewed and commented on by several groups so that the changes can be scrutinized before taking effect. The decision has been made by Canisius College to redraft the school's sexual harassment policy based upon recent rulings that changed various aspects of public policy on the matter. Three of the College's vice presidents, Dr. Herbert J. Nelson (Academic Affairs), Dr. Ellen O. Conley (Student Affairs), and Mr. John J. Hurley (College Relations), have been working on the new policy, the first draft of which was presented to College President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. on Tuesday October 27. Mr. Hurley explained the impetus behind the redrafting. In the course of the last year, there have been a number of significant decisions, both at the Supreme Court level and at the Court of Appeals level, that had an impact on sexual harassment issues. "The revised policy is taking into account the new decisions, Hurley explained."
