VOLUME LVII, NUMBER 22 Search On for Hoop Coach Applications have been taken by Canisius' ]7-member Athletic Board ever since Macarchuk announced his decision to leave the Griffs and accept the head coaching position at Fordham University on April 15. by Dave Hibbard The search is on for a new men's basketball coach to replace former Canisius mentor Nick Macarchuk. "It threw me off a little," Giscombe said. "But I guess he's making the right decision for himself. I'm happy for him." In a telephone interview with The Griffin from his home in Liverpool, Giscombe stated that he was very surprised with Macarchuk's decision to leave Canisius. The recruits are Gregg Smith, a 6-1 point guard from Uniondale; Chuck Giscombe, a 6-3 guard from Liverpool; and Robert Renfroe, a 6-11 center, who is originally from Jacksonville, Fla., but played his high school basketball in Gainesville, Ga. From the Athletic Board, a special search committee, consisting of representatives from the athletic department, administration, alumni and faculty, as well as student representative Keith O'Donnell '88, was established to review those applications. The committee met yesterday, Monday and last Wednesday to discuss the credentials of the candidates. Giscombe, however, said that he is definitely coming to play for the Griffs next season. "As far as me leaving, the offer (from Canisius) was too good to pass up," he said. "No other school treated me like Canisius did. 'The only way that I won't be on the squad next year is if the new coach doesn't like me." Efforts by The Griffin to contact Smith and Renfroe this week were unsuccessful. Macarchuk's decision to leave has generated some reaction from Canisius players. Among the candidates whose names have been mentioned as possible replacements for Macarchuk are current Canisius assistant Stan Van Gundy; former Canisius assistant Howie Dickenman, who is currently an assistant at Connecticut; Providence assistant Gordon Chiesa; and Buffalo State Coach Dick Bihr. "Everybody was shocked. It just happened like that," said junior point guard Nick Macarchuk III, who played for his father for three years. "Last year with UConn (where Coach Macarchuk was rumored to be headed), it was drawn out. This year, it was bang-bang." "It disappointing because he's (Macarchuk) a real motivator," said freshman point guard Jamel Mosley. "He gave us courage and established mental toughness. "I'm very Interested in the job" Bihr told The Griffin on Wednesday. "It's a good position. I grew up in Buffalo so naturally I'm interested." The decision of the Athletic Board may have an effect on the three recruits who signed letters of intent to play at Canisius next season. In addition, Canisius President Rev. James M. Demske, S.J., received calls from Villanova Coach Rollie Massimino and Boston Celtics President and General Manager Red Auerbach, both reportedly recommending persons for the Griffs job, The Griffin learned Tuesday night. Bihr has already sent in his application for the position. by Molly McCarthy Workmen for the Uniland Corporation, owners of the former Sears parking ramp on Main and Jefferson Streets, were busy during the week of the College's holiday break removing asbestos insulation surrounding the pipes in the ramp. Consultants, advising Uniland regarding the renovation of the Sears parking ramp, informed the corporation recently of the presence of asbestos in the structure. In compliance with state laws, Uniland was required to either remove the material from the ramp or encapsule it sealing it from exposure. I thought he'd stay another year or so and give it another shot with the talent we have." Live Talk Show at KAC by Jackie Kuczkowski Nationally syndicated talk show host, Sally Jessy Raphael, will be in Buffalo next week to tape a week of shows in the Koessler Athletic Center. The show will air locally Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. on WIVB-TV, Channel 4. According to Ron Gates of WIVB-TV, bringing the very popular talk show host to Buffalo required rather extensive planning. As long ago as last summer, Gates inquired into what it would take to have Raphael or Donahue tape their shows in Buffalo. Originally, February was chosen for the tapings, but it was later decided that May was better. The trip to Given the subject matter of some of her shows, Pat Greenwald, associate vice president of development, was interested in the topics to be discussed in Buffalo. At a meeting, held Monday, April 27, these were outlined. Greenwald notes that the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday shows will be live, and others will be taped and telecast later that week. Nevertheless, students may feel some inconveniences since parking at Koessler will be restricted to those attending the show. Channel 4 does not anticipate any grave problems and apologizes in advance. "Channel 4 appreciates what the college is doing. We don't want to inconvenience anyone." Buffalo is only the sixth or seventh time Raphael has taken her show on the road. People, associated with the show, visited Buffalo last month to scout locations for taping the shows. Options included UB's Katherine Cornell theater, Upton Hall at Buffalo State, and the Hyatt Ballroom. According to Gates, "there were a variety of problems associated with each location." Secondly, Raphael's people wanted a large audience, and these facilities are capable of housing only 400 to 600. Koessler provides much more capacity. There will be at least 1,000 seats on the floor, and with the bleechers, over 2,000 will attend each show. "Canisius also has the advantage of being right there on the subway."{cont'd from page 6) Sally Jessy Raphael, a nationally syndicated talk show host, puts a question to a member of the audience during one of her daily televised programs. ———— Serving The College Community ▼ * w-*jy- # VWrA- M WUtk - k • lir FRIDAY, MAY 1, 1987
