"We were very impressed with him," Fr. Hennessey said. Fr. Knoth is "very studentoriented" and "made a very favorable impression" with the search committee. The two candidates that remain are Rev. Bernard P. Knoth, S.J., and Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. The search for a new president for Canisius College will soon be coming to an end. This is because thecommitteecharged with searching for the new president has narrowed the field down to two potential presidents, according to Rev. James Hennessey, S.J., rector of the Jesuit Community and chair ol the search committee. According to Dr. Joan Connell, vice president for Academic Affairs, "his job was to walk us through the process that Middle States requires, not to critique or evaluate us." On Tuesday, March 23, Dr. John Erickson, associate director of the Middle Slates Association of Colleges and Schools (Middle States), visited the Canisius campus for the preliminary visit prior to the accreditation visit which will take place during the Fall of 1994. Thispow wow hasattractcd much attention from the Native American community Dr. Birch states, "they want to sec the pow wow happen. They want B uff'alo to have an annual pow wow. They arc ripe for the event." According to Dr. Birch, "We will be running shuttles courtesy of Dr. [ThomasE. | Miller's! vice president for Student Affairs] office. Birch says "wc went to the Native Americans not for input but to be the event." by Aimee Carrier Griffin News Reporter The committee has had a mass mailing of flyers to grade schools and high schools, and contincntally to Native American Nations. They are expecting any where between 5(X) and 5,000 people for the event. The more people who attend means more money will be made for the scholarship fund. According to Birch,"a pow wow is traditionally an outside event. When they moved to college campuses, they were held indoors. The Sports Arena at Buffalo State is the David E. Birch, associate professor of political science and committee chair, also cites other benefits of having the pow wow at the Sports Arena rather than Kocssler Athletic Center (KAC). Although the Native American organization at Buffalo Slate will receive lOpercentoftheprofitsmade, the rest will go directly to the Native American Scholarship Fund established at Canisius last year by the Scholarship Associates. On April 3 and4, the Native American Pow Wow, "Sunrise at the Western Door," wil I be held at Buffalo State College Sports Arena. The event was originallyplannedtobeheldatCanisius College, according U) Dr. Marcheta L. Birch, associate professor of political science and adviser to the Pow Wow committee, but "the benefits will still apply to Canisius even though it's at Buffalo State." According to Erickson, ihc Middle Suites Association covers the Middle Atlantic states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The association accredits institutions from high schools to large, research universities. The Middle States Association is one of six accrediting bodies in the nation. After the accreditation visit, members of the team write a recommendation to the Committee on Higher Education. The recommendations can range from re-accreditation to a recommendation not to reaccredit and everything in between. "It is unlikely that we will not be reaccredited," Connell slated. The Accreditation Team consists of six to eight faculty members and/ or administrators from other institutions within the Association. Members of the team are picked in a way so that they tire members of a similar institution. "The self-study is the evaluations written down," Connell said. "A team of visitors will come in and validates the self-study," she added. ing committees" for the self study, she said. Each committee will be sharing their work with the larger group of faculty and staff. "We will be putting out a call for volunteers to serve on work- According to Connell, the self study "will entail our looking at every area of the College and evaluate how they are serving students." Erickson will receive a plan of how the self study will proceed in late summer."It makes a nice hook to hang it all on," she said. Erickson suggested that the ccntcr of the year-and-a-half self study be to think of the student as center of the process. According to Connell, "all the other areas of campus need to show how they revolvesaround the student." "He told us to evaluate and analyze the effectiveness of what we do in relation to our plans and goals," she said. "He wants less description and moreevaluation of how we do what we are supposed to do," she continued. According to Connell, while he was on campus, he met with Rev. James M. Demske, S.J., College president, his cabinet, the steering committee, members of the College's faculty, representatives of the student body and members of the Board of Trustees.
