The Hon. Timothy J. Cooper presided over the arraignment of King. King is accused of vehicular assault in the second degree and failure to keep to the right of a double yellow line. According to lab results, King was driving with a blood alcohol level well over. 10, the legal level for driving while intoxicated, when he allegedly crossed over the center line and hit Brown's car. His plea of not guilty sent gasps through the otherwise silent courtroom. According to Sheila Dunphy, Frisch community assistant, Brown's family requested the vigil at the courthouse by his friends. Brown, a resident of Frisch, has been hospitalized since the accident occured on April 6 during spring break. He remains in critical condition at Erie County Medical Center (ECMQ. Two vans and several cars of Canisius students traveled to the Town of Evans Court Monday for the arraignment of Terry King, the man accused in the accident of freshman Jeffrey Brown. The students were joined by many of Brown's friends from his home town of Silver Creek. "It's now a matter of using the resources that we have," he said. The third area, student center/ student activities space, focuses directly on the Student Center.' 'The Student Center isn't very studentcentered," Miller explained. Plans include removing the Student Center Auditorium and remodeling the Grupp Fireside Lounge to be more conducive to student use. "St. Vincent's figures prominently into this Plan," Miller added. The former St. Vincent de Paul Church would function as an auditorium for speakers, such as Terry Anderson this past year, and for meetings, such as academic convocations. "Our intention is to make the theatre in the 1908 Building a home for Little Theatre," Miller lieved — that the College should build a new residence facility on the former Mt. St. Joe's property. "We need to build across the street to accommodate the loss of capacity in Bosch and Frisch," Miller said. The new residence hall will also fill the void when the current residence halIs are closed due to the renovations. "This is a three-year project," Miller said, designating a year to build the new residence hal I, a year to renovate cither Bosch or Frisch, and then a year to renovate the other. According to Dr. Laurence W. Franz, vice president for Business and Finance and College Treasurer, the Bursar's Office would be moved into Bagen Hall, closer to the Registrar and Financial Aid. St. Joseph Academy Building, now the 1908 Building. The architects called for the renovation of the 1908 Building and the relocation there of administrative offices that have no direct links to student services. The architects confirmed what Miller and other members of the College community already be- fices to the Health Science Center. The second area of the study, residence halls, is of great concern to the College, Miller said. "Bosch and Frisch Halls have insufficient common space and insufficient private space," he continued. The College plans to create study lounges and recreational lounge space within both Bosch and Frisch Halls. They also plan to convert some of the residential space into suite-style residences as well as maintain the traditional corridorstyle dormitories. VOLUME LXIV, NUMBER 22 Students rally Evans court by Tina M. Bacon Special to The Griffin The case was held over until May 23, allowing King the 45 days permitted by law to prepare his defense and file pre-trial motions. The People asked for $2,500 bail based on the severity of the case and the fact that Brown is in critical condition; the defense requested King be released on hisown recognizance, saying that he has children and a steady job. Cooper set bail at $2,500 in property, allowing a week for King to post bail. The ride home from the courtroom was filled with emotion. Students remembered Brown and the fun times they had shared. With tears in many eyes, they remembered their first meetings with Brown and shared these memories with one another. The students also discussed the penalty, most agreeing that King should be in jail for a long time for what happened to Brown. According to Dunphy, Brown's condition has worsened recently. He has developed pneumonia and jaundice. Since the accident, Brown has undergone brain surgery to release the pressure of his swollen brain tissue, a tracheotomy, surgery on his broken jaw, and surgery to remove part of his lung. One friend of Brown summed up the sentiment of those who attended the arraignment: "I just want Jeff back." cave in on Brown. He remains in a coma at ECMC.
