On Monday, March 9, the Board of Trustees approved the college operating budget of approximately $60 million for 1998-1999. It contains indications that the college has gone through its worst times and that live with. Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Laurence Franz, vice president for Business and Finance and College Treasurer, noted, "I don't think anyone was happy with it." Dr. Richard Wall, interim Vice President for Student Affairs, commented that "it [the budget] shares the burden as the budget situation is on the upswing. The 1998-1999 budget runs from June 1, 1998 through May 31, 1999. The Afro-American Gospel Ensemble performed a traditional African song accappella. Following their crowd pleasing performance, Champa and Chmpey Kong recited Cambodian poetry on the topic of love and revenge. Despite a minor glitch with the tape, Joanne Shen and Wayland Chin sang a beautiful duet of a Chinese love song. Opening remarks were made by the event's cochairs, Daniel Csapody, Nancy Gaudreault, and Monica Razo. The entertainment proportion of the event was then kicked off with Emcee Peter Cumbo bringing his wit to help host the fashion show portion. Traditional wear was worn by Canisius student models from Oman, India, Mexico, Hungary, Spain, Japan, China, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The evening commenced with an international buffet with a wide range of food from countries and regions such as Africa, China, France, Greece, India, Poland, and Spain. Robert Shufelt, a Festival night attendee as well as committee member stated, "The variety of the food was awesome, and it all tasted extravagant." Festival Night was a success drawing a crowd of about 460 to a packed cafeteria for an evening of entertainment and food. With Festival Night on Friday, March 6 this year's International Fest celebration came to a close. The week, coordinated by the International Fest Committee and the Office of International Student Programs was host to three themed evenings, Noche de Carnivale, a Cultural Evening, and the Festival night. The women's lacrosse team will take to the field soon for the first time ever at Canisius as an NCAA Division I team. For a preview and schedule, check out Sports... For graduate education students, tuition increased $20 to $415 per credit hour and for MBA students, tuition increased $24 to $499 per credit hour. Tuition increases are stabilizing after a 7.1% ($900) tuition increase last year (1997-98 budget) and more than an 8% ($950) tuition increase two years ago (1996-97 budget).
