Presidential hopefuls held Mardi Gras celebrations of their own Tuesday, Mar. 7., also "Super Tuesday," as the polls closed and showed Vice President A1 Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush with decisive leads for their party nominations. Gore currently has 1,152 delegates out of 2,170 needed to win the nomination. In New York State, Gore won 65% of the vote. His challenger, former Sen. Bill Bradley, won 34% of the vote. Bush boasts 660 of the 1,034 delegates he needs to secure the Republican nomination while Arizona Sen. John McCain is hanging on to a respectable 210. At one stirring moment he held his hand in the air and swore he would be the President who would take an oath on the Bible and live up to his word. He believes, "Our party is ready to lead this country Schools," but would return the control of school policies to state and local governments. of the candidates attended pep rallies in Western New York to bolster voter support. Friday, Mar. 3 Bush made a quick stop at an airport rally where he confidently extolled a nomination he felt was guaranteed. With former GOP candidate Elizabeth Dole, Gov. George E. Pataki, State Republican Chairman William Powers, Rep. Tom Reynolds, Rep. Jack Quinn, and his wife Laura behind him, Bush addressed a group of excited party loyalists. Members of the College Republicans and Sig Ep joined Niagara University students on stage with Bush as he promised to "do the people's business" and concern himself with education, tax cuts, and the military. The Undergraduate Student Association (USA) met for the second week in a row on Wednesday of this week, due to the upcoming spring break. USA President Greg Heeb updated the Senate on the Board of Trustees meeting he attended. The Board of Trustees passed the budget for next year. This budget does include an in- crease in tuition as well as a purported $ 1 million increase in financial aid.
