The "don't drink milk, drink beer" ad, centered around the website www.milksucks.com. was Two weeks ago, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launced a campaign aimed at college undergraduates asking them "Got Beer?" If PETA's ad campaign focused its energy mainly on college undergraduate students, then it was, in theory, asking 2,384 Canisius students to break the law by ignoring the drinking age. tion." Another argument against PETA's campaign is the accusation that it encourages students to break or disregard the laws of the state. According to the Office of Admissions, a full 84 percent of Canisius undergrads are under the legal drinking age of twenty-one. The upcoming renovation of Main Street from Bailey to highwayl98, was discussed at a meeting, led by Father Mark Moleski.S. J., Wednesday afternoon in the Grupp Fireside Lounge. Gerry entered the East Aurora Mayoral race in part because no one else had in twelve years. He felt strongly it was important in a small town, where every decision affects people's lives, that the leader of the community should be challenged,".. .that way he at least has to offer new ideas, new vision, and deal with the problems of today Issues." And Gerry had issues and ideas to bring to the race. Gerry describes East Aurora as a unique village of about 7,000 residents with 4,000 registered voters. Best known for Vidler's store and the Roycroft movement, it is the home base of Fisher Price Toys and former president Millard Filmore's house. "It's a warm, clean village of friendly streets, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and seems to get along well." Gerry, who'll join the Honors program next semester, chose Canisius in part because his parents are both graduates, he hopes to enjoy the same great experiences they recall, and for another, less typical reason. He "wanted to be in Western New York....to be involved in the community.. .to make a difference." As a junior in high school he had worked as a Page for Congressman Jack Quinn, and fell in love with government and public service, discovering that he could make a difference in people's lives if he worked hard through government. Gerry admits he's addicted to politics. "Some people like sports," he said, "I like politics." Well then, pull up a chair and listen closely. 'Civics 101' taught by 19 year old Canisius Freshman Gerry Paradise is now in session. Think your vote doesn't count? Have you even bothered to register? Maybe you already hold cynical beliefs that entrenched government can't be breached, the 'graying of America' precludes meaningful participation of young adults in the political process, or that "you can't fight City Hall." Foremost, he sought to improve communication from Village Hall. There Milk has, in a few cases, been linked to diabetes and heart disease, and PETA also claims that, While both of these problems faced by PETA are essentially true, the campaign did have a seemingly legitimate basis. Milk and dairy products are loaded with both fat and cholesterol. They contain pesticides and hormone drugs, which can be hazardous to your health. See Muin St page 3.
