The Griffin today Vou mi LXXI FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2000 Ni mbi k II Canisius lends a helping hand to the community by Jen Jarman Griffin News Reporter Overall - students, and administrators alike, approached the Snow Storm of 2000 that hit the city of Buffalo on Monday, Nov. 20, 2000 with a positive attitude and a sense of adventure. Yes, there was the inconvenience of being stranded on campus overnight, not being able to tell which lump in the parking lot was actually your car and having cold, wet feet from walking outside in the snow, but for most students it was a huge stress relief and a time to be a kid playing in the snow. According to A1 Pilato, assistant director of Residence Life, "It was a pretty fun and exciting night." The seriousness of the situation made its full impact on the College in the early afternoon around 2 p.m. It was at that point that there were six inches of snow and the level was rising. Public Safety began to closely monitor the situation and along with the Physical Plant, tried to help people as much as they were able to in the parking lots, either helping them to dig their cars out or to jump start them. Also, the word went out that the College was officially closing at three in the afternoon and that everyone should leave, if possible. With Main Street in total gridlock and the snow continuing to fall at a very rapid pace, the situation turned from one of concern and monitoring to one of making sure that every person on Canisius property was "Safe and Warm." This new situation went into effect around 6 p.m. and required that everyone had See Helping page 3 CANISIUS BRAVES THE SNOW NOVEMBER, 2000 Public Safety Asst. THF SNOW - IH Stuck on campus—tales from the ramp by Eric DuVall Griffin News Reporter Many Canisius students and faculty had a bad start to their week off from school. The unexpected snowstorm Monday afternoon stranded commuters at school for an unexpected stay overnight. The storm dumped a little over two feet of snow in the Buffalo Metro area and surrounding suburbs. It was the third largest 24- hour snowfall in Buffalo history. In reality, it was about six hours worth of time in the early to late afternoon when the snowfall was the worst. The condensed amount of time led up to rush hour traffic. What happens when you mix two feet of new snow with a Monday night commute? Nothing. Just ask Wendy Smith and Erica Wilmore, Canisius Juniors who are also Commuter students. "I got in my car to go home after my 2:30 class was canceled. My car was parked in the Spillman Lot. It took us a good 15 minutes to walk from the Churchhill Tower to our car. Then, once we got the car cleaned off and started we went down Jefferson Ave. to Main St. Just that far took us over an hour. Then our car quit, right in front of Wehle Technology Center." From there, the two parted ways. While Wendy stayed with her broken down car, Erica decided to brave See Stranded page 3 Al Pil.ito, i ■ .! <lii> i tor served ut command • ' Hi/ il (luring llii mio1 - storm on Monday night.
