In its aftermath, the country has been and will continue to face overwhelming odds in its attempts to recover: over 4,400 people were injured, hundreds are still missing and 1.1 million people are now homeless because of the quake. It is believed, according to some rough estimates, that the country is facing over $1 billion in damage. On Wednesday, Salvadorean President Francisco Flores announced that rescue efforts will be discontinued by Saturday, saying that it is highly unlikely that any other survivors will be found after that point, which will mark the tenth day of rescue efforts. This announcement was primarily aimed at the frantic rescue efforts that are still continuing in Las Colinas, an area about 7.5 miles west of the capital, where the earthquake buried hundreds of houses under tons of dirt and See Connections page 5 Canisius connections, Salvadorean style Professor gives account of El Salvador earthquake by Meredith Christman Griffin News Editor Gent and his family were in San Salvador during the recent earthquake on Jan. 13 which registered 7.6 on the Richter scale.
