The Canisius College Jazz Ensemble is an 18-piece band comprised mostly of Canisius students and a few alumni. The group has played on campus, as well as at the Colored Musicians Club at the corner of Broadway and Michigan, the Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls, and the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. They play a wide variety of jazz music from such artists as Dave Wolpe, Sammy Nestico, Doug Beach, and Buffalo native Don Menza. trophy but also opened for the Clark Terry Quintet with each band playing thirty-minute sets. Terry, a renowned trumpet player, who has often been called "America's Number One Jazz Educator," is a legendary jazz performer who has played with such notable jazz bands as the Count Basie Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra as well as being the first African American to perform on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Prior to his performance on Saturday, Terry also gave a one-hour clinic on jazz improvisational soloing. "It was a great opportunity to hear and open for Clark Terry," stated Ciraolo. This past weekend, the Canisius College lazz Ensemble traveled to Villanova University in Villanova, PA where they participated on Saturday in the Villanova Jazz Festival, winning first place in the non-music major Collegiate Big Band Competition. It is a national jazz ensemble festival, which featured nine bands grouped into two divisions, music majors and non-music majors. The bands performing were Canisius College, Central Connecticut State University, Grove City College, Johns Hopkins University, Lebanon Valley College, Montclair State University, Temple University, Towson University, and the University of Connecticut. In the music major Collegiate Big Band Competition, Tynple University edged out Towson University while in the non-music major Collegiate Big Band Competition, Canisius College defeated Johns Hopkins University. This is Canisius' first ever win at this festival. "It was a wonderful experience for the Canisius College Jazz Ensemble to get exposure with schools our size as well as larger schools," said Canisius College Jazz Ensemble director Peter Ciraolo. Incoming freshmen, during their Welcome Weekend, also do service work in the district. The college has been organizing several community service programs during the early weeks of spring to begin another new year of outdoorbased service in an effort to help the surrounding neighborhoods. Assistant director of Alumni Relations Tim In addition to the annual Clean Up, Campus Ministry and Alumni Relations will cosponsor the Third Annual Canisius Community Day, Saturday, April 20. This event, similar to the Hamlin Park Clean Up, brings together current students, faculty, and alumni in an effort to better the community. the college. Thirty-seven students helped pick up trash and rake leaves—much to the delight of the college's neighbors. Feedback from the community was positive. The owner of the EM Tea Coffee Cup Caf6 gave students coffee and hot chocolate as a way of thanking the students for their efforts in the community. Anyone interested in participating should contact Van Volkenburg in Campus Ministry or e-mail him at vanvolkj@canisius.edu. This event promises not only to be a great way to give back to the community, but to meet Canisius Alumni as well. Scharf is the committee chairperson for this year's event, while Joe Van Volkenburg and Sr. Pat Brady are in charge of recruiting volunteers. Community Day works a little differently than the Hamlin Park Clean Up because specific organizations and their home bases will be the targets of the community work. The sites at which volunteers are offering their time are 1490 Enterprises, Vive la Casa, the Boys and Girls Club on Northland Ave., the Friends of the Elderly Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, the Food Bank of Western New York, and the Lutheran Church Home of Buffalo. Joe VanVolkenburg commented, "This is a great opportunity to help out the community and to meet Canisius Alumni. We already have the basketball team, the Ice Griffs, and Sigma Phi Epsilon committed to helping us out, as well as members of Residence Life." The Day runs from 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. Lunch and a t-shirt will be provided to all 100- plus volunteers, approximately 75 of which are students. Alumni, parents, and faculty comprise the rest.
