live in a campus-owned house on Florida Street. Three of the students received $500 each to go toward food, clothing and school supplies through the NCAA emergency fund. The students were eligible to receive the money because they were athletes and were qualified by FAFSA. The students also received warm-ups and other athletic clothing from several teams. The men's basketball team donated sneakers. The coaches of the students' team were also present during the demolition of the house. Chartwells also made a donation, providing dinners for one week and $50 on the students' flex. In addition, the bookstore will supply the students with free books. Books were also donated by several of the students' professors. The house was demolished Sunday afternoon for safety and to assist in the operation, and provided the students with $140 checks to Target, to go toward men's clothing and shoes. They also supplied toiletry kits. See Fire page 2 Alumnus receives award Strigl said. He found his first job at the New York Telephone Company by wandering Main Street and he proceeded to climb the corporate ladder, learning about all aspects of the business, from sales to management to engineering. Strigl was instrumental in educating the public about cellular service when it was just getting off the ground. His most important contribution, however, was making sure the system worked. "I had a ball. It was fun, entrepreneurial, building from scratch. 1 had gone...with the charge of marketing the service, but one of the real challenges was to make the system work. It had 17 cell sites, and the service didn't work worth a damn," Strigl said. Today, under Strigl's steady hand, Verizon is known for their "Can you hear me now?" advertising campaign. Canisius Alumnus Dennis Strigl, '74, was named the 2002 Person of the Year for his work as president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless Inc. Each year RCR Wireless News awards this honor to the person who has had the most impact on the wireless industry. Strigl, who pioneered the development of the cellular telephone network, is a leader in the telecommunications field. A Buffalo native, Strigl sought work as an airline pilot after graduating from Canisius with a bachelor's degree in marketing. He interviewed with major airlines, but changed his destiny at the last minute by considering a friend's advice. "I thought the telephone business was probably one of the least interesting professions. But before I took an airline job, a friend said 'Why not try the industry?'" The first incident occurred on Friday, Jan. 24 in the afternoon when a pipe burst above the ceiling in the enrollment management office, occupied by Dean Anthony Bellia. Recent frigid temperatures caused the problems with the piping system. "The cold air got into the building and froze the lines at an elbow where two pipes meet," Tim Feider, director of the Physical Plant, said. Tuesday, Jan. 28, a second, less severe incident occurred, this time in the basement of the building. Freezing pipes, similar to the first occurrence, caused a sprinkler head to burst. Maintenance was able to contain the water to a small area more easily and quicker than the first leak due to their experiences with the first incident. undetermined. Cleanup of the rooms started immediately and the College's maintenance crew did most of the work. Physical Plant also asked a few other services to assist in the effort. "We brought in Servicemaster to clean the carpets, as they have better equipment," Feider said. Additional work included getting the moisture out of the walls and cleaning the furniture. Enrollment management will be temporarily located in one of the conference rooms in Lyons until everything in the office is back in working order. There was minimal damage in the basement after Tuesday's incident, including water in the hallway. It is the first occurrence of this nature since Lyons was renovated three years ago. Feider attributes the problem to the prolonged near zero weather of the past few weeks. "When you get into cold weather, it doesn't take much" for something like this to happen, said Feider. Pipes burst, flood Lyons Hall "We were able to shut everything down and put a new sprinkler head on to get things going again," Feider said. Public Safety officers, responding to a fire alarm last Friday, found that the sprinkler system had activated above the office. Water built up above the ceiling tiles causing them to collapse. Students now have the chance to catch favorite shows on more channels with the new offer of digital cable from Adelphia. See the story on page 2.
