Six Canisius graduates, headlined by a former editor-inchief of The Griffin, were honored as distinguished alumni on Saturday. Features Editor Jen Gorczynski profiles the recipients, who have found significant success long after their college years. "The newspaper articles this past summer did not tell enough about him [Winter]," said Cooke. "It is only fitting that we dedicate the Student Center in his name since this was the origin of many football games where Dick cheered on the Golden Griffins as president of the Blue and Gold Club for three years." Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., Canisius College president, offered some words as part of the dedication. "The Jesuit education I received made all of this possible," said Winter. "It is always a pleasure for me to come back and contribute to Canisius and Buffalo."On Monday, October 6, Canisius College dedicated the Student Center in honor of Richard E. Page 19 The Finance Committee of the Full Board of Trustees met with Canisius College administration on Monday, Oct. 6 to discuss problems in the school's 1997-98 budget. The college is currently suffering a budgetary deficit of $2.5 million in a total budget of $60 million. Prior to meeting with the full board this past Monday, the president of the College, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. and all Canisius vice presidents decided to make cuts of approximately $1.4 million in this year's budget and to use $350,000 in budget reserves to help account for the 4 percent shortage. For additional help, they also decided to increase the spending of Canisius' $50 million endowment from 5 percent to 7 percent. Explaining the decline in college enrollment, Cooke related that "there has been a pattern in regard to undergraduate enrollment which has been going down over the last six or seven years." It is now that the cumulative effect of small decreases has had a significant effect, because we haven't been adjusting the size of our faculty to the decreased number of students." Ignatius founded the Jesuits after experiencing a spiritual conversion upon returning home from fighting the French. Every day computer technicians come to the various labs on campus to help fix problems with the computers. Most of the time the techs only have to put software back onto the computer that was corrupted. With so many students using the computers every day, there tends to be corruption on the computers simply from daily use. There is really nothing that can be done about that. Usually the only open computer a student sees has a sign on it that says, "Out of Order." Most of the time there is merely a software corruption on that functions almost instantly, but software corruption must be done by ITS staff themselves. Dr. Joel Cohen, director of ITS, offered advice as to what students encounter and what students can do in order to sidestep common problems and expand their computing capabilities. See St. Ignatius page 5 Have you ever walked into the computer lab just to find that there would be no computers available for at least half an hour? Yes, we all have. Just this past Tuesday there was a problem with all of the computers in the labs. A file on the server was corrupted and had to be restored from a tape backup, which took a long time.
