ROTC Arranges Gala Military Ball
By KEVIN O'NEIL
In keeping with the patriotic spirit occasioned by Washington's Birthday, the officers at "Fort Delavan" have announced that this year's Military Ball will be held on February 22
The beautiful Terrace
Room of the Hotel Statler will be the scene of this annual social highlight of the ROTC calendar. The dance will be open to all Military Science students as well as to those couples whom the senior class members of the Cadet Corps wish to invite. Each senior will be allowed to invite one couple.
Dave Cheskin's fine or¬ chestra will provide the music for the asj)iring gen¬ erals and tlieir guests. "Rev¬ eille" will be at 9 p.m., "taps" at one, and the ad¬ mission is three dollars per couple.
As in previous years, the dance will be formal, that is, with the cadets wearing their uniforms. Highlights of the evening will in¬ clude a grand march and the se¬ lection of a queen to preside over the night.
Many local dignitaries from the political, athletic, and business worlds as well as high-ranking of¬ ficers of the various services in the area have been invited and are expected to attend.
The Military Ball has annually been one of the most impressive and enjoyable affairs of the col¬ lege year, and this year's event is expected to be no exception.
Radical Change In Convocation Format
Something new in convocations has been instituted, with each year having its own forum on a Wednesday after¬ noon from 4 to 5 p. m. in the lounge.
The first convocation was held
last Wednesday for the juniors. Seniors will have theirs on Feb¬ ruary 27, sophomores on March 6 and the frosh on March 13.
Each of these "cracker barrel" meetings features several speakers of the administration. Each class president will preside over his cla.ss's convocation.
At the juniors' convoca¬ tion, Fr. Martin F. Maho¬ ney, S.J., the Dean, spoke on "The Academic Facts of Life," primarily the re¬ quirements for satisfactory academic standing.
Fr. Lawrence M. Wilson, S.J., Student Counsellor, urged each student to be mindful of the ap¬
proach of Lent by resolving to at¬ tend daily Mass and also by sac¬ rificing each week for the Jesuit missions.
"Things Sometimes Forgotten," regulations concerning absences, smoking, conduct at basketball games, and parking were brought out by the Dean of Men, Fr. Jo¬ seph J. McEvoy, S.J.
Fr. Edward B. Gillen, S.J., will speak at each of the other convocations, re¬ viewing the college's co- curricular activity p r o- gram.
The afternoon's program was ended with President Ed Canna- ta's report on several phases of the Junior Prom.
Frat Leads Griff Jaunt To Syracuse
The Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity is sponsoring a basketball excursion to Syra¬ cuse on February 20. A roundtrip ticket on the Thruway bus is [)riced at $3.50.
Due to the fact that Canisius l)lays the first game of the double- header, which begins at 7:30, at Syracuse, the bus will leave the College promptly at 3:15 p.m. The return bus will leave Syra¬ cuse at 12:30.
Those ROTC cadets who take part in the excursion will be excused from drill at 3 p.m.
The chairman of the affair, Tony Bisantz, has set Monday, February 18, as the deadline for the purchase of tickets, x^nyone interested in securing a ticket should contact a member of Alpha Phi Omega for information.
Freshmen Elect Slate Of Officers
A total of 171 of 350 freshmen, approximately 50% of the class, voted in the frosh class elections
held on February 1. The follow¬ ing were elected officers: Joseph Laughlin, president, Peter Za- lewski and William Maguire, vice-presidents, Harold Brand, secretary, and John Kirsch, treasurer.
Joe Laughlin is a grad¬ uate of St. Joseph's Col¬ legiate Institute in Ken¬ more and is enrolled in the Social Studies course.
Pete Zalewski, the first vice- president, an Arts student, is a graduate of Canisius High School, where he played varsity baseball and basketball, and was an honor student.
Bill Maguire, second vice-president and captain of the frosh cagers, hails from Philadelphia's West Catholic High School which produced such out¬ standing Canisius men as Bob Kelly, Fran Corcoran, and Jimmy Young. Bill is a student in the Business Administration course.
Secretary Harry Brand and Treasurer Jack Kirsch are both graduates of Canisius High School. Brand is a Pre-Engineer¬ ing student and Kirsch, who com¬ peted on the freshman cross coun¬ try team, is in the Social Studies curriculum.
LT Prepares For Varied Productions
The date of next Tuesday, February 19, will be one for all students who are devotees of the theater to mark in their little black books. On this date the Little Theater will spon¬ sor an Open House in Delavan Hall.
To attract as many new mem¬
bers as possible, for both the act¬ ing and the behind-the-scenes phases of dramatics, variety acts by several aspiring student per¬ formers and scenes from such past Little Theatre successes as Our Town will be presented.
At the Open House, Mr. Walter Swift, director of the group, will be available to answer any questions concerning the activities of the organization.
The Jesuit One-Act Play Fes¬ tival will take place here at Can¬ isius on the evening of February 22, with each college of the New York Province staging a produc¬ tion. In addition to Canisius' or¬ iginal effort. Vamp Till Ready, which concerns a husband and wife Broadway show team, St. Peter's College of Jersey City will do Pericles at the Devil's Bridge, by Henri Gheon, and Le Moyne of Syracuse will present Sup¬ pressed Desires by Susan Glas- pell. Fordham University's pro¬ duction has not yet been an¬ nounced.
Tickets for the February 22 performance, which are priced at $.75 for students, are available at the Book¬ store. In view of the fact that there will be only one performance of these plays and the limited seating cap¬ acity of the Little Theater, students are advised to get their tickets early.
As a final look into the future, it has been announced that the
theater's spring production. Mur¬ der in the Cathedral, will have its opening on Friday, April 5.
Blood Drive Quota Fixed
On Wednesday, February 20, the second semester Red Cross Blood Drive will be held in the Student Lounge.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the College from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Donors will be excused from the class during which they donate blood and the period following, for purposes of recuperation.
All Canisius College students are urged to donate in order to meet the quota, which is 20% of the student body. Students under twenty-one years of age are re¬ minded that they need a release slip signed by their parent or guardian in order to give their blood. These sHps may be ob¬ tained from any of the section captains.
Diet instructions will be posted throughout the basement to in¬ form the participants of suggested foods to be eaten before the time of donation. Donors are instructed that fatty foods taken before the donation will make their blood useless. The Red Cross requests prospective donors to refrain from eating these foods, which include eggs, bacon, and the like, prior to donation.
The victors
Behind class banner are I. to r. J. Kirsch, P. Zalewski, J. Laugh¬ lin, W. Maguire, and H. Brand.
