Bill Brooks has vacated his position as Dean of Students to head the new Division of Recruitment Office at Canisius. classes at Canisius. "It is also crucial to recruit students who fit into this mode of the college", Brooks noted. He hopes to do this through direct mail programs, and increased distribution of evening division literature in newspapers and other local publications. Contacting interest groups through lectures and seminars is another objective. Lois Baker, Public Information Officer at Canisius, stated that she met with Brooks early last week to discuss future recruitment campaigns for evening students. "I think its an excellent step to bring the recruitment office into the college proper, who have a better feel for the needs of the college", she commented. Baker added that although things are still in the planning stage, she expects the Public Information Office to be confronted with additional demands as these plans are carried out by the Division of Recruitment. Brooks commented on the need for a steady input of "creative marketing ideas" to reach perspective evening students. "Most people want to, but don't know how to go about returning to school. We may even have some parents of Canisius students attending evening classes.", he noted. The Griffin/Joe Conboy appears to be thoroughly positive." His attitude about relocating in Buffalo is optimistic. Dr. Miller com- " mented, "My wife and children'will be joining me shortly. We are buying a house and have intentions of establishing roots in Buffalo." At age 30, Dr. Miller is one of the youngest members of Canisius' administration. The new dean remarked, "I don't know if my youth will be a factor in my effectiveness. I hope, however, that it will provide neither expectations nor limitations for me as I do my job." Since Canisius College is so much smaller than Indiana University where there is an enrollment of over 30,000, Dr. Miller is looking forward to being able to know students as individuals. He said, "I hope to be able to establish a relationship with the student body that will be a foundation for personal operations." Dr. Miller noted his first impressions of Canisius saying, "It is a friendly place with a healthy spirit and an impressive caliber of merit with trouble makes a job challenging but hardly ever enjoyable."Dr. Miller expressed relief that his duties include more than problem solving "because constant involve- As a result of his education and experience in the field, Dr. Miller explained, "I have developed an expertise in solving the various problems that involve students." According to the official "job description" of the Dean of Students position, Dr. Miller will be responsible for supervising the Director of Student Activities and the Director of Residence Life and submitting an annual report to the Vice President for Student Affairs as well as directly dealing with the students and their problems. He possesses a doctorate in higher education with minors in college administration and business administration.Dr. Miller has received experience in student affairs work by serving at Indiana University for three years as Coordinator for Residence Life and for two years as Assistant Director of Residence Life and Assistant to the Dean of Student Services. Dr. Miller has also held the position of Assistant Dean of Men at Shippensburg State College in Pennsylvania.According to Brooks, there are no additional funds being drawn from the Canisius budget for the Division of Recruitment. He explained that the money which was to be allocated toward Career Services is now being utilized to meet the needs of the new Recruitment Office. When asked if he was regrettful about leaving his job as Dean of Students, Brooks replied, "I've enjoyed it. I hope I can continue to keep contact with the students." He sees his new job as being "more under control", as it requires the establishment of benchmarks, time limits and control variables crucial to recruitment projects of this kind. The Admissions Office concentrates almost exclusively on contacting high-school students for the day division. The Division of Recruitment hopes to reach other members of the public sector concerning the attendance of evening The replacement of Career Services culminates more than a year of consideration by the college since Father Ryan, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, first conceived the idea. sider" who has been at Canisius long enough to be aware of the improvements needed in the Recruitment Office. "The college felt it was time to bring our own people in", he added. Case Food Co. Replaces ARA, Promise There will be major changes in the operation of the cafeteria, according to Case Food Service Manager Mr. Dennis Lyons. He is very enthusiastic about the plans he hopes to institute this year at Canisius. States Lyons "Our first concern is to make the students happy. If the students are happy the school is happy." Levey, vice-president for student affairs, and a member of that committee.Other members of the Food Committee which evaluated the ARA Food Service and selected the Case Food Service Company to replace them included Dr. Franz,- Mr. Lee Fassel, director of student activities; Mr.Anthony Battaglia, director of purchasing and auxiliary; Mr. Gerald Z. Darcy, Controller and Budget Director; George Palumbo, Professor of Economics and Finance,- and students Maureen Lynch and Michael Gee. The Case Food Service Company, which also operates at Daemen College, Canisius High School, Westinghouse Corporation, and Fisher-Price Industries, was selected by the Food Committee over several other bids because "Case had a much better overall plan for the students," according to Ms. Lillian James Robert Arnone A new food service company has replaced the ARA Food Service Company which operated in the cafeteria year because school officials were not satisfied with the old company's performance, according to top Canisius College Administrators. The Case Food Company took over in mid-July according to Dr. Lawrence Franz, vice-president of finance. He stated, "We were not satisfied with the ARA Food Service. Financially the school suffered a loss. I did not feel that the level of service ARA provided was of professional quality." The "limited" breakfast under this plan will include one entree and four extra items, of which two must be beverages. The "limited" lunch would include one entree and five One big change will be the use of a Dorm Student Lunch ID card instead of the food coupons which were used last year, Lyons says. According to Lyons, "Under this plan, dorm students will be alloted 19 meals a week." These meals would include one "limited" breakfast, one "limited" lunch, and "unlimited" dinner each weekday, states Lyons. On Saturday and Sunday dorm students would be allocated an "unlimited" brunch and dinner. Lyons states that the reason for this method is "to take the uncertainty out of the dorm student's diet. We want the parents who send their children here to be assured that their children are getting a good diet." Miller from Indiana University has been appointed Dean of Students at Canisius College by Father James M. Demske, college president. A search committee consisting of students, faculty members, administrators and a member of the Board of Regents recommended Dr. Miller after reviewing more than 70 applicants. Mr. William T. Brooks, who left the Dean of Students post to head Canisius' newly formed Office of Student Recruitment, chaired the committee that sought his replacement."In actuality, it is an improvement for the evening division", Brooks noted. He explained that the Career Services Office operated according to "a contract type basis, as an outside service that the college was utilizing." The Division of Recruitment differs in that it is staffed by full time, regularly salaried employees. Pat Clayback and Tom Hersey are serving as full time officers on Brook's staff. Brooks felt that the position was offered to him because the college considered it practical to hire "or This division, described by Brooks as "a recruitment operation for evening students", has replaced the Career Services Office at the college.by Kathy Wasik
